Four teenage girls in Africa have invented a generator powered by pee | |

This will not work the way they say, There is not enough hydrogen that can be obtained from a litre of urine to run that generator for six minutes, much less six hours. It would also have to be compressed before being fed into the combustion chambre. |

Naw, this one splits the urine into hydrogen, nitrogen, and water. The hydrogen gets burned in a generator to make electric power. It isn't a battery described as you've suggested. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27477571 not really, it probably works exactly as they say it does, they probably use solar to start the whole process off then switch to generator power ones enough gas has been made to create pressure in the buffer canister. |

Hydrogen gas has to be highly compressed to run an engine like that on the generator, especially since H will only realistically produce about 65% of the power obtained from the same vaporised volume of gasoline. |
| Red Hot Chilean Pepe User ID: 27475995 11/10/2012 07:22 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll post here what someone posted in the comments section of the news site that is exactly what I think. The only intelligent question remaining here is "How do they power the electrolytic cell?" It's a wonder to see girls in Africa doing this kind of technical proof of concept. By the wat, this is totally technically feasible and has been for a long time, and it would work also with water only, but certainly the salts in the pee catalyze the water electrolysis lowering the energy requirement to release the H. The only downside is that breaking water molecules to get the H takes energy in, anyway, and it has been long discussed if this is an energy efficient process, so the technical feasibility has never been in question, just the economic feasibility. All great truths begin as Blasphemies. G.B.S. GLP is like a diamond mine of information, in the sense that you have to shovel mountains of crap to find the diamonds, but it's still worth the pain. |
