Don't think for one moment that the majority of gun owners won't give up thier guns if asked politely by the governemnt. The rest will give them up sooner or latter only a very small percentage will not, and those will be dealt with in an efficent and descrete manner.

Don't think that the government will take your guns by knocking on your door..you will not even get a chance to use your guns...once they know you are a danger they will deal with you but not in the way you think..

Hiding your guns underground in waterproof storage is a sensible idea but also not fail proof..there are many ways in which your behaviour can be reported and your gun stash found..of course you will also have the problem of acquiring ammo.

Resistance to the fascist agenda is always good. Sometimes a tactical retreat is called for - government might be feeling tooled up and strong and wanting to pull a Waco and thats exactly the time you declare a "tragic boating accident" and wait for the clouds to clear.

Mexico is a good example. The government of Mexico failing and inexorably losing control of its outlying areas to a combination of gangsters and corrupt police. Your average inhabitant of these areas would have been better off armed (yes-they were disarmed previously) as they adjust to the new "governments". Then they could self-organise for security and represent to the gangs. Guns become the new political representation and a tool of negotiation. Without them, the populace tends toward cattle.

The whole world is heading Mexico's way. USA is ahead of Australia, but we're well on the way too. Only China is stopping our slide fro now.

The reality is they want you to have guns its good business. and dont think for a minute that the worlds strongest military is afraid of an armed public. if the wanted a military dictatorship it would happen with or without you owning guns. this is not 1776. relax!

People today who have guns for personal protection are not of the same mentality as peoople who turned over family hunting rifles of another time. Although nearly all legal gun owners are law abiding citizens, I believe a very large percentage will not just turn over their guns willingly.
The right to have weapons were designed originally for us to be able fight the government if needed. And that has not changed.
If our government tries to take our weapons it will not be without serious loss of life on both the citizen and authority sides. Not only that, but after a few gun battles the military or police will be very personally hesitant to knock on the next door to collect a gun. Also you must consider that brother will most likely not take a brother's gun.
I expect that the government will just make the ammunition so very hard to get that the guns will be useless. Most people do not load their own ammo so the very small number of people who do would be much easier to disarm with overwhelming force.

So people, do not let it happen. If you are a gun owner, you need to get an ample supply of ammo and be ready.
