"Every single storm is an opportunity to take a step back from the coast. Instead, coastal development continues." Young cited the example of Dauphin Island, Ala., which has been inundated by storms eight times in 26 years. Each time, he said, the federal government has stepped in and paid to rebuild the island's infrastructure. "That's crazy," Young said. Fast Forward |

That is a good question, I would have thought it would rise at the same rate everywhere. Might be something to do with the shape of the sea floor in the area or something, like tsunamis can be worse on some coasts because of the shape of the sea floor. |

Quoting: Rain-Man Probably we can expect same trend in future .. US geologists say East Coast earthquakes travel farther, do more damage than thought before .. By Associated Press, Published: November 6 RICHMOND, Va. — Data from the 2011 earthquake centered in Virginia shows East Coast tremors can travel much farther and cause damage over larger areas than previously thought, the U.S. Geological Survey said Tuesday. The agency estimated about one-third of the U.S. population could have felt the magnitude 5.8 tremor centered about 50 miles northwest of Richmond, which would mean more people were affected than any earthquake in U.S. history. Scientists also found the quake that caused more than $200 million in damage triggered landslides at distances four times farther and over an area 20 times larger than research from previous quakes has shown. Rain-Man (OP) User ID: 27463731 Bosnia and Herzegovina 11/10/2012 07:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | US East, West Coasts face fast-rising sea levels Two new reports indicate that sea-level rise will put the hurt on both the East and West coasts of the US, and that if one of the West Coast's all-too-familiar major earthquakes should occur, things could get mighty dicey mighty fast. According to the US Geological Survey – hardly a hotbed of wild-eyed alarmists – the East Coast is experiencing sea-level rise at about three to four times that of global rise, the USGS's report concludes. "Many people mistakenly think that the rate of sea level rise is the same everywhere as glaciers and ice caps melt, increasing the volume of ocean water, but other effects can be as large or larger than the so-called 'eustatic' rise," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt when announcing the report. [link to www.theregister.co.uk] Sea Level Rise Accelerating in U.S. Atlantic Coast [link to www.usgs.gov] The accelerating rise And this rise is accelerating, said Tal Ezer, a researcher at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. His colleague, Larry Atkinson, said computer models suggest that if this acceleration continues at the same pace, the rise along the East Coast — from North Carolina to Massachusetts — could be 5.3 feet (1.6 meters) by 2100. Sea levels on this stretch of land have climbed as much as 1.5 inches (3.7 centimeters) per decade since 1980, while globally they've risen up to 0.4 inches (1.0 cm) per decade, according to a study by Sallenger published in June. Why is the rise accelerating? Researchers said it's due in part to the sinking of land in the mid-Atlantic, a process called subsidence. Also, warming oceans have decreased the flow rate of the Gulf Stream, a current that ferries warm water from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico northeast across the Atlantic. With a less intense Gulf Stream, water is backed up toward the shore, causing sea level rise. Differences in coastal geography, temperature and salinity (salt content) cause different rates of rise along the East Coast, Atkinson said. Sea levels worldwide are rising due to melting of glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as expansion of water caused by heating, researchers said. Anonymous Coward User ID: 27041005 United States 11/10/2012 08:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Water reacts to gravity. Gravity is not universally the same on Earth. Some spots have greater or lesser gravity. Water is pretty heavy and some places have more elastic properties in the crust structure. One example is the Gulf of Mexico area. A small increase in water depth has a magnified increase of the sea floor subsidence because the crust is balloon like there. For the east coast of America I have read that title waves or tsunami can punch down the coast a bit with no rebound. It is thought that even continuous large waves can have this effect. Recent studies have shown that large waves impacting the shore can be detected far inland and can be a factor in earth activity. Another force is extreme low pressure systems that carry a crown of water with them across seismic sensitive areas. The added water weight makes itself known to any lesser structure. |

Pakistan has sunk 10 feet this year as seen by Nasa's Earth Changes Satelite. Vietnam is now doing the same thing on its Southern Coast. |
