Thanks RedPaw .. EQReport.com is reporting that 1 million people will be affected by this quake. The depth of the quake was very shallow. Update 01:38 UTC : We do absolutely NOT like what we see. Also the nearby Chinese seismological instruments are reporting a Magnitude of M7.0 at a depth of 20 km ! Such an earthquake at this depth is very destructive ! [link to earthquake-report.com] |

| Mahala User ID: 25504168 11/10/2012 09:19 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Strong earthquake strikes Myanmar The U.S. Geographical Survey said the epicenter of the 6.6-magnitude temblor that hit at 7:42 a.m. local time was about 17 miles east of Shwebo, or 72 miles northwest of Mandalay, and 6 miles underground. Two milder quakes estimated at 5.0 magnitude struck about 20 minutes later about 50 miles northwest of Mandalay, USGS reported. (snip) President Barack Obama is scheduled to become the first American president to visit Myanmar during a Nov. 17-20 tour of Southeast Asia that will include Thailand and Cambodia, the White House said Thursday. The quake was initially estimated at 7.0 magnitude but was revised lower by the USGS. The USGS said much of the population exposed to the earthquake lives in structures vulnerable to shaking. The area has been subject to secondary effects of temblors such as landslides. Vincent Price - “A man who limits his interests, limits his life.” |

Looks like it is an alluvial plane subject to liquefaction and separation from the two ridges bordering to the east and west. I didn't see a major population or village nearby which could be good for the inhabitants of the region. Antipode.com is down for me, anyone get a bearing on the antipodes yet? After such a massive earthquake, we reckon that the power and the telecommunications will be down in a radius of at least 50 km around the epicenter. - Awaiting more news we have been checking the landscape in the epicenter area. More bad news here, the epicenter is rather close to a transform fault line. Transform earthquakes are among the most damaging earthquake types. Additionally, the epicenter is close to an important river bed, which means that soft sediment can make a serious portion of the soil. Soft soil is very dangerous for earthquakes. Rock layers are decreasing the wave. Acceleration maps would give us a clue how the soil in that area is composed. - The image below shows a detailed view of the epicenter area and the towns. The bigger star is the M6.8 mainshock, the 3 smaller stars the M5 aftershocks. [link to earthquake-report.com] |
