un-treated natural gas has the odor of hydrocarbons. If it came directly from the earth through some sort of fault, it would have the smell. But, this doesn't look like a natural gas explosion. Looks more like a missile. But I'm no pro

Sounds like the Indy "Circle of Unconsciousness" is the big issue now, not the FEMA/military in the streets or the original explosion in the mystery house.

So if someone living in an area where there's been a LOT of gas drilling were to smell a petroleum odor outside their property - does that mean there's a leak of pure gas from a nearby well?

They'er probably just discovering the casualties of the blastwave in the wreckage. If it shook the opies house so hard what do you think it would do to people closer to the explosion. The pressure wave can easily knock people unconscious.

True but the explosion happened hours ago. If they have been unconscious for that long they are dead.

Yes. The natural gas that we get in our homes is treated with mercaptans, chemicals that give off the smell of rotten eggs so people can smell it if it leaks. It's a law that it must be treated so people can smell it and take action.
