I seen pics in the past with a pipe line blowing up and this just shows surface explosion to me. I am wrong? Edit to add. But who knows maybe some one there was making a bomb or something. And screwed it up. No. There's no oxygen in pipes. In order to be explosive the gas must first be released from the pipe and then combine with oxygen in the air. So if a gas line were turned on in the house and gas and air (with oxygen) mixed for a couple of hours, then when someone flicks a light switch the whole house blows up. Or, alternatively, maybe someone poured ten gallons of gasoline into the house on the floors and let most of it evaporate. That would be the equivalent of 100 sticks of dynamite when the gasoline/oxygen mixture ignites. I think that's probable. Arson of both homes seems likely to me because of the burned looking foundation and because it was two homes, not one that blew up. I wonder if these were vacant homes that were foreclosed? |

Looks to me, from the helicopter shots, that gas accumulated in one of the homes basement, reached an ignition source and boom. Could be neglect in part of the contractors and inspectors. It's not gonna turn out to be a mishap on the Gas company. Those pipes under that community are fairly new. Most likely neglect or error on contractors and or Inspector. In fact, my initial thought, after looking at the flyover videos, was that something came from the sky at, say, a 35 to 40 degree angle, impacts the first house (the house nearest where the road turns) at the top and then cut/crushed it from the top, through the house (still keeping the angle) and then towards the next house which then got hit low. |

If it were gas, it would be known by now. Cause is still unknown. Not confirmed but "highly suspected" by the authorities, at this time. Actually I read one authority say that although speculation is gas, the scale of the blast was too large to be gas. I am looking for the link. I have seen a couple of gas explosions. It is amazing the damage that can be done...much worse than we see here. One of them picked up a large building and blew pieces over half a mile. It is usually known almost immediately that this is the cause though. There is no evidence at this point only speculation that it may be gas. True ^ Last night what had us GLPers in overdrive, was the fact that DHS & ATF were on the scene stat. Gas leaks, are usually recognized as the cause fairly quickly. This explosion was not. And, thanks to OP & AC 12831839....these two were awesome & contributed so much to this story |
| INK3 User ID: 27337849 11/11/2012 10:49 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Several years ago some idiot in my town decided to blow up his house using one of those huge propane tanks (kept int he backyard, used to heat the entire house). This was in the Midwest, I've never seen them in the Northeast. Anyway, he ran a line into the house to leak in the gas, took his family elsewhere, and set the stove timer (propane gas stove) to go on. I lived a mile away and my house shook, it literally shook me out of bed. The blast lifted nearby houses off their foundations, blew out windows and doors for several blocks, etc.,. Don't know what the case is here, but gas explosions can be huge. There were matchstick size pieces of the house, and insulation was blown all over the place.
