I think one of the problems is lack of social cohesion..and the dumbing down intellectually etc..of the base..grass roots..so you have the top of the pyramid still functioning more of less..while the base is starting to crumble..obviously it cant sustain itself without a solid base

Since when ? The civil war was fought for states rights as the North sought to impose economic sanctions. Not slavery.
