He wanted a Glock 17 and it took them several weeks to get it for him instead of the 10 days. Nothing to do with supply this was purchased before the election. Supply wise shops are running out fast of the more "Tactical" firearms. |

I used to get delayed before I got my Conceal Carry license. Reason was I had top secret clearance in the military and it took a while to get through the extra security. Not sure if you were in the military but that is why mine was delayed. Now it's no issue. BTW, you should buy a Colt instead. |

They either tell you proceed, delay, or deny. It takes 5 minutes for the retailer to call the check in. If they say proceed you take the gun with you at that time. If they say delay it can only be a max of three business days. If they deny you then you don't get the weapon. I think some of you have been given the runaround by lazy retailers. Some things I have noticed: If you give your ssn you are less likely to get delayed, but that is optional. Anyone claiming to have some kind of clearance gets delayed. Most people who get denied know exactly why they are denied for felonies, domestic violence misdemeanors, or orders of protection against them. |

I've called these in hundreds of times and some individuals just get delayed. If they haven't made up their mind in three days the Brady law says the dealer can transfer the firearm anyways. In any case I wouldn't be worried like I said before many people get delayed and I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that they just randomly do it for no reason or cause. Hope this eases your mind a bit. |

I had a police officer tell me one time that he didn't have to fill one out. LOL Needless to say I called and checked he was a police officer but I opted to void the sale because he insisted he wasn't required. Make no mistake everyone has to fill out a 4473 even if they hold a special license waving the call in. |

I really do suspect you will get a call from the dealer telling you to come pick up your weapon. I've personally never had one get denied where the client didn't have something hiding in their closet. I've also had clients tell me they've just purchased one somewhere else and got instant approval so I see nothing wrong here. Sucks you couldn't walk out with your new toy though. Good Luck! |

| Makesnosense User ID: 26748791 11/11/2012 07:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah everyone including that police officer has to fill one out. OP sometimes I think the FBI gets backlogged and that can also cause a delay. When a firearm is called in there can be two stages that the information passes through. The initial operator can say proceed or pass you on to another operator to do a little more thorough check. I think this is where the system gets gummed up occasionally. Don't sweat it. If your not denied initially, you'll get your weapon in most cases. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 18260563 11/11/2012 07:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ^^^^^ There probably are a lot more collectors than you realize though. Firearms can be a good hobby. It is something that is tangible, doesn't lose value unless it is miss-cared for, and tend to become heirloom items. I'd rather hand my children a collection of guns when I am too old to use them, than tell them I drank my "fun" money away on the weekends at the bar. Just a different hobby/collectors item, that isn't a complete waste of money (like many hobbies are), and can be used properly as a tool for hunting or used recreationally for target practice. |

OP, I don't know if this has been answered for you yet, since I'm just responding and not reading all the posts. If you are Delayed: There is probably someone with a name and physical build which matches yours who has lost his right to self defense. 9 times out of 10 that's what it is. "The Brady Law does not prohibit you from transferring the weapon on (current date +6 days)" is what the NICS call center says. That's VERBATIM what they say. So yeah, it's probably nothing, don't fret. They do that shit to about 1:4 transfers. If they call back (which they do) before the 6 days have passed then the FFL should call you and let you know the results. |

It's just a process to keep criminals from acquiring them thru legal means. there are always people at shows trying to sell or trade their own guns NICS only gets your name and social and the type of weapon intended to be transferred. Never the make/model or serial number. The call to them is very scripted and straight forward. There is no deviation from the 'question -> response' format. The only records that are kept on single pistol or long gun purchases are to be held at the FFL's location that you purchased from (or handled the transfer for internet sales). Those are the Bound Book and the 4473's. Neither of which will leave the property, EVER. The atf can NOT take the original 4473's or the Bound Book. Period. Paragraph. End of story. FFL's have to mail the originals and the bound book to the atf upon relinquishing their FFL or closing that business location down. That's when the atf gets them, and never before that point in time. So buy from your local gun shops and keep the Bound Books in your State. Now, the sale of Multiple Handguns (and multiple rifles if your in a border state) are recorded on an additional form as well as the 4473. The makes/models/serials ARE recorded on that form. One copy goes to the Chief of Police or County Sheriff (whichever it falls under as the highest LEO). One copy is faxed/mailed to the atf in dc. The final copy (yes it's in triplicate) stays on file at the FFL, and is typically stapled to the 4473. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25658088 Sorry, you live in a stupid state. Same here, but I purchased a rifle from Dunhams a couple weeks back and they still ran me through NICS. It is their store policy, then after the NICS came back clean they had to fax all the paperwork to their corporate headquaters to get the ok from them. They pulled the same thing last year for another purchase. Any place else in Iowa I pull out the CCW and walk out the door no questions asked. |
