What I truly do not understand when I watch that video.. is how people think they are going to have power in their homes any time soon!
The water line inside the house was 2/3 to ¾ the way up the first floor wall. All the wiring got wet, all the connections got wet… the electrical panel, which is usually in a basement would have been under water, salt water, for a few days at least…. There isn’t a chance in hell these people will see power in their homes until that wiring is all replaced… if their homes aren’t condemned.

These people need to be looking at relocating.. winter is here and they cannot live in those houses.

I feel you! Here on the Spaced Coast of Florida,in 2004 we were hit by Hurricanne Charlie, no warning due to retarded forecasters, and lost power for 3 weeks at my house, in 96 degree weather with 90% humidity end of August.

I would not know if the media covered it at all, but we had giant live oaks blocking the roads, no sign of FEMA, Red Cross, no relief whatsoever. We got out our chain saws and opened the roads ourselves. We did not expect any relief.

As soon as power was restored, we got hit by Hurricane Frances, lost power again for another 3 weeks. I had waist deep water in my yard, finally got ahold of a generator, boiled water on my propane grill. etc, then got hit by Hurricane Jeanne.

None of us here expected help. We never got any either. We just did for ourselves. It was brutal

I feel awful for poeple dealing with cold weather and no electricity. Hot humid weather no electricity is no picnic either. Forget about sleep. Try hauling ten tons of oak branches during tropical weather.

My point is that nobody I knew expected government assistance. Why do these people in Sandy expect it?

The essence of life is endless escape from various pains.

They just now escape from more primitives.

prepare for over 2 weeks of no power.................................................

a storm can hit anywhere....anywhere on this planet and disrupt our life.
so don't say move....and how long and how much supplies are enough?

I just read in Newsday (Long Island newspaper), LIPA estimates that it would cost between 20 - 30 billion to bury the wires.

Those living on Long Island that are mot prepared for bad storms need to make preparations a priority if they escaped this storm unscathed.

You would almost have to disconnect every house from the electric pole.

Every house is a potential fire if the power is turned on without very close inspection.

What about any gas leaks or gasoline cans that have leaked or are leaking in the structure.

There is no way that a power utility will just turn on power to a neighbor hood.........

Me I would be looking for a yacht to move into.

You can prepare but know when to go to family or friends for awhile.
