Still you need a healthy economy and civil people to let gold do the job. Physical goods that are needed will be useful, gold is just a trade mark when society is stable.

Of course when is say SHTF, i don't mean anarchy and roasting babies over fires, i'm talking about who suddenly has the wealth.
