That's how the middle class has been been destroyed in western nations. Obviously the rich benefit from it since there are in general higher returns on investments (and if your middle class you can't have many investments). And when the new poor start complaining it is suddenly called class warfare (which in itself is correct, but it started back in the 80's and became significantly worse after the end of the cold war)...

Harper already announced a couple of months ago that he was dropping the requirement that new immigrants have a basic grasp of either English or French. So I'm already expecting a swarthy flood of $10 a day competition without the need for any games at all.

In 16 weeks they learned how to place the raw stock in a vise or fixture, push the green button, do secondary ops while machine is running, then take out the part and start all over. They were also taught what the big red "Oh Shit" button is for that stops the machine after the loud crunch sound is heard. They were not taught how to program or set up the machines, and probably have to get a superior to make offsets for them when the parts get out of spec.

I was there when I first started, low pay button pusher, but now have my own shop. If they have the mechanical smarts, drive and will to succeed they will quickly climb the ladder, and depending on the shop should be around $20hr. Still not great by historical standards, but competing with China is a bitch and they are keeping wages low.

$12 is total crap pay for anything skilled. Learn to build a website, $30+/hour for basic stuff. Serious not so common IT skills $100+/hour.

3M jobs to be filled but they can't pay more than $12/hour? Maybe if the pay didn't suck they would get more people to train as machinists. How are you supposed to pay rent and pay back student loans on that?

$12 hour on the job training would be a different matter.

Seems like they are trying to calibrate our pay scale to compete with China...

that's the hilarious part, the republicans here blaming it on the obama economy, when it's free market capitalism, outsourcing, and a 'strong dollar policy' that caused it along with unchecked immigration. Republicans always claimed to support sealing up the border but they only did it with words to get people to vote for them, they never actually took action. These parties are out there to fool the whole likes of you sheep.

The rich got richer on the backs of lower wages, it's not because of democrats (though I'm not claiming there's a huge difference between the two)

Now it's too late to do anything about it. The bubble is massive, the debt levels astronomical, and interest rates will be stuck at zero for years or until we burst/collapse, while the average real wage continues to decline as jobs continue to leave the US. The illegals are here in droves and still coming, the outsourcing continues aggressively. There's no jobs left.

Free market now means you must go to college and be an enginner or pharmacist, until so many people do that pretty soon the wages for those jobs starts to decline too. That's the inevitable outcome of all this, even college educated professions start to suffer wage declines.

All these college grads on their high horse saying people need to educate themselves, that's not the real core problem here.

Bottom line, we are selling out our future generations so we can benefit now.. more specifically, the top is selling us out for the bottom line, profit margins, stock prices.

There's still opportunity there though in skilled professions such as pharmacists, doctors, plumbers, etc. It's up for the opportune young person to have an elder guide them in the right direction and of course to have the drive and urge to want to succeed, and not just party, drink, and lay around. Admittedly there's too much of that going on.

Yup, they started the class war not us, when they started shipping out jobs to China. There is no such thing as a free market and never has been in the entire 5000 year history of commerce on this planet. Business never had the right to import anything. If they were allowed to do it at, all they paid heavy fines in the form of tariffs to do it.

All I see here on this site is brain dead idiots complaining about unemployed people getting food stamps. 25 years ago we made the fuckers responsible for the unemployment in the first place pay for the food stamps with heavy duties on imported shit. We should be doing that right now.

I worked in an aircraft factory in a small maryland city way back in 1978-83 and was making $12-$13/hour back then! And that was relatively unskilled....trained on the job.

And a fairly nice house cost around $50-$60,000.

You couldn't afford much of a house today off of $12/hour...devalued currency.

McDonalds pay starts at $12 an hour now too, and they get benefits...

12 bucks an hour? That would be a little more than 300 bucks a week net. Who the fuck can live on that?

CNC machines and modern fabrication processes have destroyed the demand for machinists..there's no reason to pay them more than 8/hour even if they have 30 years experience and an outstanding work ethic


A machinist is a dinosaur..there's too many of them and no one needs their skills just like we don't need skills in manual typewriting or calligraphy or sword making anymore

Machinists need to get with the times and get a high technology job if they are smart enough

$12 an hour is very close to MINIMUM SALARY in Canada.

A job at McDonals pays as much.

Wal-Mart has unions in China. The government forced it on Wal-Mart.

And corporations are already leaving China because the salaries are going up... and they are moving to Vietnam and these kind of places where the workers are treated like crap.

No you don't. I know someone who was making $12-$13 an hour. On unemployment he is making $250/week or $6 an hour average based on 40 hours.

If you're going to state facts at least make them somewhat accurate.

I live in Reno, and literally the only jobs are for doctors, nurses, workhouse laborer, and miscallaneous service workers in Casinos.

All the other service jobs like cashiers and waiters are only reserved for college aged women.


All the small businesses have either shut down, downsized, or on the verge of collapse.

The university admissions rate drops by 12% each semester for the past few years.

You can still buy a 20Lb bag of rice for $7.99. You can live on that for at least a month. Not too bad for 1 hour of work, or coffee break.

shoot, I pay my guys over $20 in a little Podunk town that averages 8 per hr.

The business next to me pays the guys half of what my guys make and work long hrs.

I have long term employees, you can't do to well on $10 per hr, especially if you have a family.

They get a bonus if we have a good week.

And...we work 9 hrs Mon through Thurs. and 1/2 day Fri. Weekends off. I figure they can pick up some work on the weekend if they need more.

It is a start up business, and they didn't know squat when they started. 2 years they make 200+ more a week than when they started.

I make money, they make money.
