Why are people so sure that the world is not going to end?

It helps psych themselves out because deep down inside they are scared shitless of what really awaits.

Why don't they just surrender to the truth, just face it its over

+1. Everyone knows deep down in their hearts this world cannot last. You just have to open your eyes and see whats going on around you.

it's got to do with the human mind

the human minds builds linear models out of non-linear processes...people tend to think that the future will just be an iteration of the past, everything will remain stable etc

a few examples

just because we had real food for hundreds of thousands of years doesn't mean we will have real food into the future,in two decades from 1995 until today our food has become GMO

Bees, cockroaches and other insects are dying out en masse, just because we had them for millions years doesn't mean we will have them in the future..in 10 years the bee population has dwindled and the cockroaches are dying out

obviously it's the same with everything else...people think that just because the Western world has been stable for 60 years everything will be ok into the future but the truth is that we are all about to be hit very hard in every way

Women especially like to be conservative and they're model of the world in very linear and absolute

But why is it not possible to have a cosmic event that will change everything?

Highly possible, but likely no.

things will change, economies will collapse, people will die and suffer, but life will go on.

It might not be the cushy, comfortable life americans demand, but life will go on. I don't believe things will collapse back to the stone age.

Unless we have a major EMP episode that destroys our entire technological infrastructure on a planet-wide scale... the odds of that happening are low. We might struggle for awhile but in a time of crisis I believe the world will come together and help one another, not start trying to take each other over.

Its called the normalcy bias. Just because they've never faced anything like it, removes it from the realm of possibilities.

Because people are led to believe anything big takes millions of years to happen. Even if there was doom headed our way, scientist will insist it'll take millions upon millions of years to play out.

I think shoemaker levy and comet holmes did a good job of putting these scientist in their place. The universe is very unpredictable.

The answer is this : Because it hasn't yet.

Doom has been upon us so many times, people have been predicting the end of the world since the beginning of the written record, but it just keeps on keeping on. Why? Why are people so enamored of the "end of the world"?

It's because life is hard, and it sucks more often than it doesn't. Generation after generation have said "the world is dark and wicked, and it can't get any worse than this!."

Think about how human beings view the world. We are naturally egocentric. We think that because our life sucks, everyone's does. We think that because we see all this wickedness around us, that that's all there must be to see. We are short-sighted, short-memoried, vain, and not all that enthused about thinking what the future might hold.

Makes sense that we all see the end of the world coming "soon", doesn't it?

Only fools are certain. I am sure of nothing, there is a rainbow of infinite possibilities before us, and I do not see extinction as any one of them. We're like roaches. There are humans in so many places, and climates, and conditions, that a few of us are bound to survive, barring destruction of the planet altogether. I guess what I am trying to say is, why are you so sure it is?

The end of the world does not entail the death of every human being. If you kill about 90% or so, close enough. That is very likely to happen. And sooner than than you think, and I once thought.
