| Jento User ID: 27314653 11/12/2012 03:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is the real deal. IF you don't buy insurance then the IRS will find you (They have hired something like 16,000 new employees for this purpose). They will then tell you to buy insurance or pay the fine. The fine will be small at first, something like 500-1000 dollars a year. But it is slated to rise over the years until its waste to not buy insurance. By that time the regulations being placed on private insurance companies will have put them out of business (as evidenced by whats happened in states to previously implement similar laws) so that your only option will be the government option. This government option may still be cheap at that point but since you have no other choice for insurance they can raise the price to whatever they wish along with raising the fine to whatever they wish. |
| Razgriz User ID: 10373226 11/12/2012 03:06 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.businessinsider.com] There's a link to a good article giving a run down of how the penalties work if anyone wants details. From what I understand though, if you make between $9,500 and $37,000 a year then you start at $95/person (up to 3) in your family in 2014 and then they work that up to the full $695/person (up to 3) in 2016. After that the penalty is adjusted with inflation. If you make more than $37,000, things get trickier so I'll quote: "The penalty is 2.5% of any household income above the level at which you are required to file a tax return. That level is currently $9,500 per person and $19,000 per couple. The penalty on any income above that is 2.5%. So the penalty can get expensive quickly if you make a lot of money. However, the penalty can never be more than the cost of a "Bronze" heath insurance plan purchased through one of the state "exchanges" that will be created as part of Obamacare. The CBO estimates that these policies will cost $4,500-$5,000 per person and $12,000-$12,500 per family in 2016, with the costs rising thereafter." There is also a nice table there with estimates at different income levels. The gimmick though is: The IRS says they won't enforce this supposedly so...>.> I guess there is no penalty? |

They can have you arrested, given an audit (legally, you know they can do it if they want...) finned or place a lien on you over this. Until that changes, apparently you don't have to do anything but resist the pressure of the IRS breathing down your neck. |
