Stock up on items you can barter
Like toilet paper, snacks (although when I buy them I end up eating them) batteries, candles, mags, bullets, bottled water, waterproof matches

Agreed. Once they switch over to digital currency, barter will be the way to go.

Airplane shots. At $1.50-2.50 a piece. Their value to a crazy drunk will skyrocket.

Re: Stock up on items you can barter
Coffee, chocolate, salt, pepper, wine, tea, tampons.

At one point in history pepper was literally worth it's weight in gold. Tourney prizes were sometimes paid in the persons weight in spices , like cinnamon, clove, saffron and nutmeg.

And look up true historic info on salt. People built giant stone walls to protect their salt settlements. All thing we can get now cheap. later not so much. Oh and learn to grow orchids.

I have freeze dried instant coffee.

Will seperate it into 1 tablespoon size portions to barter. People only need hot water to make it.

As much as I hate instant coffee, it will taste much better in a SHTF scenario.

I have some reservations about bartering with alcohol until things stabilize. Do not want a bunch of drunks showing up with an idea of looting.

They're not useless. You might be the best outdoorsman in the outback but when TSHTF, the predators of the four-legged variety will be, at best, a secondary concern.

barter threads

yes its a good idea but you just never know when you will
lose it all

a better idea is to gain the skills and equipment to
manufacture your barter items from local materials.

the item you manufacture could be anything from food
to even batteries if your skilled enough.

Roasting coffee is easy and fun.
Unroasted (raw-green) coffee beans keep well for 6-9 months,
longer, but flavour degrades a bit after a year or two.

I keep a large supply beans stored in burlaps sacks. ;-`)

Tobacco will also be in high demand. (I have nearly 500 packs of rolling papers stored. LoL.)

Learn to make soap, and to filter water without the store bought stuff. And flint would be useless to some as a trade item here (unless you run across someone not real bright) as I can pick it up by the bucket all day long. Learn to make knives from scrap steel there will be plenty of it. Leaf springs from a car make very nice knives.

Morning pee-pee dude!!! hf

Do not get rid of your stale coffee. Even stale, 5 year old coffee will taste good when we have not had any for months or a year.

They are already portioned out for easy bartering.

it depends

I mean in a SHTF type scenario, those without family, friends and morals will be the best suited to survive. You may be great with working with your hands but if you have a diabetic wife and two kids to take care of then you will have far less chances to survive than some psychopathic loner. You will simply not have any mobility.

If we experience a slow economic collapse, the best suited are those with farm land, no matter what skills they have...anyone can raise a rooster and plant a small garden (well, almost anyone)..those in the cities will starve.

The truth is..we don't know what the future holds so we cannot really understand who will survive and who will not we can just prepare

Every time we go to Walmart anymore, I buy a bag of sugar to keep on hand. I wanted to try growing sugar beets this year but we were not able to, sugar or some other type of sweetener would definitely be a valuable commodity.

You learn from the base up. Do you yet know how to make charcoal? I am sure you can find sand, and something along the line of a good clean moss.

Here is a link on the how to of charcoal making. Though we do not use a metal bucket.

Expand this even further, look into biochar. The most fertile soil on earth was man made although orthodox history can't tell us by whom, its called terra pretta. And get used to the fundamentals of permaculture; everything you do serves multiple purposes.

I have a patch of stevia plants in my garden. They are perienial and come back up every year. The leaves and stems can be dried, crumbled and used as a sweetener.

The can liner in Dinty Moore beef stew is much better than usual; it doesn't contain the harmful chemical that leeches out after a few years in other type cans. I've heard claims that it lasts 10 to 20 years. One can of this beef stew on top of a big batch of rice feeds a good number of people.

Was reading an interview of a guy who survived a siege of his small city in Bosnia. Pretty grim. When asked what he would have stockpiled had he known what was coming, he said "1,000 Bic lighters!"

I've always thought a supply of inexpensive reading glasses from the dollar store in various diopter strengths would be worth a lot, too.
