Re: Stock up on items you can barter
I have freeze dried instant coffee.

Will seperate it into 1 tablespoon size portions to barter. People only need hot water to make it.

As much as I hate instant coffee, it will taste much better in a SHTF scenario.

I have some reservations about bartering with alcohol until things stabilize. Do not want a bunch of drunks showing up with an idea of looting.

If you can heat water then the old style stainless steel coffee percolator and French press, coffee pots will brew you n excellent cup of coffee. You can even purchase long lasting canned green coffee beans then shell and roast them before use.

Re: Stock up on items you can barter
Everyone knows that they should be buying gold and silver for when the collapse happens. Everyone knows that they should have a supply of food and in the best of circumstances a self-sustaining off-grid farm. But, what happens after the first few months of collapse? What if things don't return to normal and the new normal is just everyday survival? What if our currency collapses, the grocery store shelves are empty and we are left to fend for ourselves. In that case bartering for everyday items will become necessary. Here is a list of the best bartering items in a mad max scenario.

Alcohol: Normally I wouldn't include alcohol mainly because the bottles are heavy and it is not a necessity except of course if it is needed medicinally, also alcohol is expensive. But, if you can stock up on it you will always have a demand for it, so that is why I have included this item.

T.P.: Have you ever gone without toilet paper for any length of time? It's not pleasant. There are very few palatable substitutions for toilet paper. Sure newspapers can be used but who knows how long newspapers would be around should a total collapse happen. People used to use leaves, corn cobs and other items but I can't see that happening except under severe circumstances. The only problem I can see with using toilet paper as a bartering item is that I would be hard pressed to exchange it unless I was starving!

Matches: Matches are a great item to stock up on and use for bartering purposes. They are small, cheap, enduring and necessary, this would be high on my list of items to stock up on.

Seeds: Seeps are controversial. Yes, seeds have been worth more than silver and gold in history. However, if the masses are starving now and if they don't know how to grow food, they might not be interested in trading for seeds. However, I would have them anyway because they will last a long time and you could always use them yourself.

Batteries: While batteries will be in demand for such items as radios and laptops should a collapse occur, they only problem is that number 1, they are expensive now and number 2 they don't last. So, although I think they are a good idea, I would not put a lot of money into batteries..still I would have some.

Canned food: Canned food is a good item because everyone needs to eat (and by canned I mean any food that can be stored without refrigeration). The negatives about canned food are that it is heavy, while it will last a long time it wont last indefinitely like matches and if people are hungry enough they will just steal it.

Cigarettes: The biggest problem with cigarettes is that they are expensive now. I am sure that you will have a market for cigarettes however, I am not so sure they are your best bet for bartering. Still, historically, they have been used and so I have decided to include them.

Aspirin: Aspirin is a great choice on several fronts. First of all aspirin will last a long time, secondly if someone needs aspirin they will trade whatever they have for it. Have you ever suffered from chronic pain? Thirdly, aspirin is small and it stores well. A great choice to use for bartering purposes in my humble opinion.

Chocolate: Chocolate is like alcohol, it's not a necessity but people want it. Also, dark chocolate has nutritional value, is a good source of calories, stores well and is relatively small. I would give dark chocolate 3 ½ stars out of 5.

Soap: Soap is one of those things that you don't miss until you don't have it. Try doing without soap for even a day and see how uncomfortable life can be. Not only that but soap is not easy to make for yourself, so it is going to be in high demand. Additionally, soap stores well and lasts a long time. If you can buy it in bulk even better.

Plastic baggies: Plastic baggies can be used for all sorts of things. If the grid goes down they can be used to store food items, as gloves or to keep things from getting wet. All sorts of plastic products will be in demand. Moreover, they don't expire so they store well. The only issue with plastic baggies is that they are relatively expensive now and you would need a place to put them, in other words the boxes are a bit bulky.

Salt: Salt has been used in lieu of money in history. It's cheap, stores well and can be used to preserve meat, something that could become very important in a SHTF scenario. Not only that, I love it and so do others and it's not easy to get. It is definitely an item I would use to barter.

Coffee: Coffee is expensive and it is not a necessity so why have I included it? I included coffee because I, along with millions of other Americans, am addicted to coffee. Not only that but how does one get coffee if not in a store? It's not like we have coffee plantations in America. So, yes coffee will be in high demand should a collapse happen and even though it is expensive I would have it if not for my own use to barter for other items. Believe me, instant coffee will bring you a high price should a collapse happen!

Not only can bartering help you get the things you need should a collapse happen, bartering can also help you now. Bartering cuts out the middle man, provides anonymity, allows you to live on a much smaller income and avoids taxation. The best thing to do is to start participating in a bartering system now. It will be difficult to start a bartering system after the collapse, if you are already familiar with the system when the collapse happens it will be a much easier transition. Good luck and happy trading!

I have a two tractor trailers full of car parts .. batteries .. engines .. lot's of metal to make bullets and more .. also own over 10 cars currently .. most are collectables .. and also dirt bikes, quads, and parts .. one go cart and a tractor ..

I also own a pool store .. with lots of chemicals and other things .. I don't know what they could be used for but I am sure in situations they would come in handy ..

Also seeds for food .. and I will be able to use my green house to keep the food coming ..

.. and physical protection with a group of people I have joined up with ..

equipment and knowledge to make liquor .. although all I make and have the knowledge/equipment for is wine or cider .. or applejack

the best barter I can have ..

I have a lot of food .. enough for about 10 people for a year .. but that is for us, unless we desperately need something .. also have a stockpile of wood but that is also for us ..

Prescription medications and antibiotics too .. or just the pure knowledge of how to treat people holistically ..

Knowledge overall of different things ..

*Btw .. if you want to have cheap waterproof matches .. buy the wooden sticks and dip the tips in candle wax ..

Other things often overlooked:

Small packets of needles/pins/threads
(Travel-size or hotel-size is perfect)

Diaper & small assortment of safety pins

Buttons, hook & eye, and snaps

Embroidery or other small scissors

Wide/narrow tooth hair comb & yarn scraps

Assorted seed beads & "pretties"

Colour chalk & crayons

AND

Paraphin blocks

There are more "goodies" which will become rarer than hens' teeth. We wouldn't normally think of little plastic barrettes as a "life & death" item but a wild-eyed Mommy with little girls might certainly ;-)

Boiling, coffee filters, distillation, water purification tabs, etc.

Take water from as far up the stream as possible from creeks (lessens chance of dead critters contamination) look for yabbies, etc (good sign the water ain't too bad) get a frontier pro filter or similar for sipping in the go, etc.

Stock up on some all weather blankets, water bottles (as in tough reliable army issue) etc. Relatively cheap, but would be in huge demand.

Roasting coffee is easy and fun.
Unroasted (raw-green) coffee beans keep well for 6-9 months,
longer, but flavour degrades a bit after a year or two.

I keep a large supply beans stored in burlaps sacks. ;-`)

Tobacco will also be in high demand. (I have nearly 500 packs of rolling papers stored. LoL.)
 Quoting: wisc_natureboy

This^

Tobacco can be grown. Having tobacco seed and knowing how to grow it would be the cheapest investment you ever make. Practicing this upcoming year would be wisdom.

Since I'm not a smoker, and tobacco could be grown again, I would trade tobacco, but realize that the crop would always be subject to theft.

This means that some new "tribes" would deliberately grow it as a cash crop, and the community would profit by trade. I suspect this would happen.

Unroasted coffee beans if vacuum packed can last two to ten years based upon the oil in the species of the bean. You roast them yourself to the darkness you like. There are videos which describe the process.

I doubt anyone would trade away their coffee though. Some describe it as black gold.

Likewise bootlegging communities will probably evolve. Experts with equipment will need security, corn or potato operations, clay pottery operations, etc.

I have previously written about three occupations which I believe will produce high trade value items:
1. Glovemakers from animal leather
2. Shoemakers from discarded tires
3. Chert and steel firestarters

Flint is not commonly found in the USA. Chert is commonly found and microslices a bit of steel off since it's hardness exceeds steel. An enterprising tribe could easily produce kits from scrap steel and package it for resale.

A potential trade item of high value would be recharging batteries by solar generation with a marine deep cycle battery. There is a high probablity of eventual theft though since the equipment would be considered so valuable.

See this topic for 500+ tips on tribal communities post-collapse:

Skills will ultimately be very high value trade items. Think about creating water purification as a new service occupation.

The easiest method used for water purification is a biosand filter. It removes 97% off all coliform bacteria.
[link to www.biosandfilter.org]

Post-collapse, wells will be dug in order to produce water for new tribes. There will be too much concern about waste runoff, particularly from applied animal waste and human waste disposal. Because of that, while well will be essential, and a seperate service industry, in addition it is typical to still have biosand filtration set up in case of leaching of this kind of waste into the water table.

Realize that there will be many more animal husbandry operations post-collapse, but very small ones.

The best way is to do an Internet search for unroasted coffee beans. Some survival companies may aftermarket them in vaccuum packed containers, but many coffee places sell unroasted beans. Buying them the latter way may be considerably cheaper. It depends upon your level of ability.
This company sells unroasted beans but not vaccuum packed.

I have sewing to barter, and a means to do so without electricity, both portable and not. And fabric to outfit a small town with enough thread I can sew until I die right now and never run out.

Thing is, you'll need clothes. I can draft patterns, I can sew the patterns and I have all the crap to do so, so a size small and a size 8X is no different. Even mending is something that will need to be done. My skills aren't exactly newbie range either, and I can do it rather speedily.

Good for you! I think people will grow flax eventually as they used to do. Naturally some will raise sheep too. Picking cotton is a miserable job due to the sharp edges of around the cotton.

Even after all of that, making the fabric from threads onto looms will take so long, that owning cloth will be a vital prep, that and strong thread. Someone mentioned needles. I remember reading several dystopian post-apocalyptic novels in which sewing needles were highly prized.

I agree with you completely. I feel certain that eventually looters will take cloth from sewing stores after they loot clothing and shoes too. The same will be true about hunting coveralls, jackets and gloves.

Second-hand clothing is relatively cheap now. It's easy to purchase them at garage sales and saves you money anyway.

Yes! The old skills are of paramount importance. To learn for today and tomorrow's continuity.

Learning macramé teaches the basics of knot tying. Great to know for making nets and a variety of other things.

Drop-spindle, carding, and simple loom setting (think backstrap loom). Widths/lengths are easy to sew into different items.

Plaiting/braiding fibers and hair.

Remember the coat of any hair/fur bearing animal can be humanely used for many purposes. They don't die (although some may act like it) when brushed & combed.

Small barter items will be necessary, though. Another little thought of item is emery boards.

And to all the boys, think of your Mothers, Aunties, Grammies, Sisters, Girlfriends, Wives... you may not appreciate how much a sample sized tube of lip colour, a pot of rouge, a cake of mascara, or a wipe of perfume will mean. Even one "luxury" item in your pocket might gain you a full pack of another more necessary item.

Actually, yes. I hate sewing leather. I can do it by hand (and machine) but it gives me hives. Tells you something about me that I would rather sew chiffon then leather. I can knit, barely, and I technically know how to crochet, but I never can get the tension right.

Needles...right now I have over 1000 needles for my machines (and they all use the standard type) in different weights. It's not intentional, however, it's because it is cheaper to buy them 100 at a time vs. 4 or 5. Hand needles...I'll just say I can't tell you how many I have simply because I like vintage notions and every time I buy something, I seem to get a pack or 10 of them. I do have 5 packs (in a case) from the Civil war that was unused, and they are loads better then brand new ones.

One thing for all you that sew: there is a vintage notion that will resharpen your needles, hand and machine. It doesn't work as well as simply getting a new one, but when SHTF I don't think you're going to care overmuch and they are usually dirt cheap.

Another item that will come in handy in the end is the old turn of the century school project notebooks for sewing. Not only do they show how to do basic stuff, but they also focus on hand sewing techniques and the one I have shows a darned project, fixing holes and other things that have been lost to modern technology. Nice thing is they all come with step by step instructions. Since I never learned this stuff, it may well be invaluable. Warning: these aren't cheap. I paid over $100 for mine, and it's beginner stuff.

And the crap they tell you about thread is wrong. It can last far longer then they like you to believe as long as it is not damaged with sunlight or other environmental factors. If you put it in a pack, lightly protected, it will last 100 years or more. As long as it doesn't snap with moderate tension, it's still good.

My bag has carpet thread (commonly known today as buttonhole thread) in it for my sewing kit that was sold in the 1910s, but more then clothing I need something to fix tents. It can, however, also fix any type of cloth, it's just a very heavy weight thread.
