The issue, however, is that this jet happens to be on the plane of ecliptic (meaning in line with the planets) which is truly phenomenal, from the standpoint of an astrophysics student, being as this means that, at that current rate of growth, if it continues to do so, it will easily surpass the orbit of Venus before it finally becomes a flare. These tend to last for weeks, as one must remember that our sun, while a yellow dwarf, is still a T Tauri Star, meaning that it does still have the occasional 'tantrum' if you will... however this is the first time I have seen one across the ecliptic plane, for the entire stent of my studies these have always remained, if we use a clock analogy, between 11-1 or 5-7. This being said, You also have to remember that the 'atmosphere' of the sun extends well beyond Mars, and as such why we study 'space weather.' What you are basically looking at is a tornado, that is aligned with the planets. |

[link to sohodata.nascom.nasa.gov] If you do a search from the 1st of November, to the 12th of November, using any of the EH standard images, there is no image for the 11th (it skips the frame no matter how much you slow it down), and the entire western face of the sun is missing in the image for the 10th (again, no matter how much you slow it down). However the rest is fluid and streamlined, even if you extend the first date back to the first of the year. It's been edited. |

I just looked at Spaceweather and they are going to be in Australia for the eclipse. I think this coincidence of that flare and the eclipse happening at the same time could give us some amazing pictures of the sun's magnetic field. Just hope it goes back down soon though...... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 27594327 United States 11/12/2012 03:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well, if it chooses to continue to grow, as opposed to igniting into an actual flare and releasing it's plasma... for starters, Mercury is going to get exceedingly hot, exceedingly fast, as it will be inside the plasma jet. If it grows at the rate that it is currently growing, Venus will most likely have a good deal of it's atmosphere seared away, and Earth is going to experience a very, very warm few days, though albeit in the southern hemisphere for the most part. If it ignites into a flare, however, as it crosses Mercury's path, which is currently very close to our own this time of year, the ensuing CME will be one akin to the one that happened around A.D. 813 wherein they saw auroras in China and India, even as far as northern Africa, as recorded by the various astronomers of those civilizations. Incidentally we didn't have electrical grids at that time, either. Therefore, indeed, I do hope that it ignites before reaching Mercury, or deal with the extremely bright sun for a few days until it passes and then allow itself to ignite, being as electrical companies in Europe, Asia, and North America all but ignored NASA concerning the Solar Peak this coming year, and have not shielded their power plants, transformers, or wires from high energy particles. |
