Huge crowds gather in Far North Queensland to watch total solar eclipse: live stream

By a remarkable celestial coincidence, the sun is 400 times wider than the moon, but also 400 times farther away, so for those on the coastline between Cairns and Port Douglas tomorrow, the discs will appear to match in size.

Casting a shadow 150km wide, the eclipse begins over the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, moves eastwards across the Gulf of Carpentaria and then crosses Queensland shortly after dawn.

More than 50,000 tourists from Europe, Asia and the US have traveled to the far north to enjoy two minutes of “totality” – weather dependent.

Hotels are completely full, cruise liners are moored offshore and forty hot air balloons will take to the sky above the Atherton Tableland.

That's interesting. When I saw that the total solar eclipse was the night of the 13th to the morning of the 14th, I assumed that was American time/date (of course! LOL) even though it will not be visible here. I had not factored in that the area where this eclipse will be visible is a day ahead so they ARE in the 13th day of November while we are in the 12th. So this is happening TONIGHT not tomorrow night. Hope to hear some great news coming from this eclipse. Maybe those things long awaited will come to pass!

It's perfectly safe during totality. At other times you do need to use safe filtration or project the sun's image using something like a pinhole camera box.

The total solar eclipse on Tuesday (Nov. 13) may only be visible from slivers of northern Australia and a swathe of open ocean, but you don't have to make an epic journey see the dramatic celestial event.

Several different organizations will webcast live views of the total solareclipse, which begins at 3:35 p.m. EST (2035 GMT) on Tuesday (Nov. 13; however, it will actually be Nov. 14 local time in Australia).
