I was told any gun less than $400 is a piece of shit so it doesnt leave the poor with many options to buy one. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1428045 That's a damn good question. Most of it's parts are machine made. It's like they hold back production to keep prices high, like they do for Corvettes. Is there a single producer that's making guns as fast as they can? |

If you're broke and need a good deal, look into surplus guns. CZ surplus pistols, eastern block tokarev pistols etc. If looking for new, the Bersa Thunder .380 is a GREAT little pistol at a very attractive price. |

Most of it's parts are machine made. It's like they hold back production to keep prices high, like they do for Corvettes. Is there a single producer that's making guns as fast as they can? they all make them as fast as they can. it isnt a harmonica, its a firearm. in a handgun you are talking chamber pressures of 12,000 to 50,000 psi. you are talking about parts that have to withstand both rubbing and impact loads. you are talking about parts that have to last through thousands of repetitions of such loads. you can buy a hi-point for about 150 bucks or so. it's a bulky clunky primitive firearm designed for most rapid production with minimal handling by people in the process. it's weak point is the magazine. but, if you know what you're doing, just a little polishing here and there, and replacing the magazine spring will make it reliable. its controls arent ideally placed, but it will go "bang" every time you pull the trigger. for about 200 dollars, you can buy an armscorp colt revolver clone in .38 special. it's made in the philippines, and isnt the most beautifully finished handgun on the planet, but it will indeed go "bang" every time you pull the trigger. as evil twin pointed out, you can buy a used s&w k frame .38 for about 200 bucks just about everywhere. if you want concealability, you can buy a brand new charter arms small frame .38 for about 300 (or a used s&w). if you lean towards autos, you can buy a keltek 9mm for about the same. it is tiny, incredibly concealable, and kicks like a goosed mule. not every sub-400 buck gun is junk. if you want big bore power, and have a low budget, a hi-point .45 will do the job, but it weighs over 3 lbs, and is in no way concealable. if you buy a surplus colt .45 auto mag, and replace the hi-point mag spring with the one from the colt mag, it becomes reliable. if you can spring for 350 bucks, you can get a charter arms bulldog revolver in .44 special. it is concealable, incredibly powerful, and as reliable as the sun. it will even have a decent trigger pull. it will also kick like a goosed mule. the higher priced firearms have better finishes, usually better trigger pulls, and are more ergonomic than the sub 300 buck ones. but those sub 300 buck ones are much better than throwing rocks. i would completely avoid the hi-point 9mm, or any jennings, bryco, or raven. those 400 buck rock island .45s are also made by armscorp, by the way. |

| Longtrain58 User ID: 27561506 11/12/2012 01:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Devaualuation of the dollar is the biggest problem. The cost of raw material, the cost of the CNC machines that make the parts, labor and of course federal excise tax have kept the cost of manufacturing high. I'm a FFL gunsmith and have had difficulties keeping costs down. Customers complain about escalating prices and I can't control the cost of supplies continuing to go up. I haven't raised my hourly rate in three years. I do feel there are certain manufacturers that have worked very had to hold prices down; S&W, Ruger and Taurus are three that come to mind. The introduction of polymers have helped too. If you shop around and if your state allows face to face sales, you can find some good deals in the online swap shops. Old Guys Rule |
