With no hint of a problem in advance, in particular no tell-tale smell of a gas leak, authorities and residents in a southern Indianapolis neighborhood are trying to make sense of an enormous blast that obliterated two homes and made dozens more uninhabitable.

Fire officials expressed amazement that only two people died in the late Saturday explosion so powerful that the devastation spread for blocks from its epicenter. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate their Richmond Hill homes, some never to return. Windows and doors were blown in. The blast rocked several houses entirely from their foundations and was so loud it awoke people three miles away. A fire burned for hours, engulfing dozens of homes.

Early Monday, Indianapolis public safety director Troy Riggs said forensic investigators were talking with utility companies and others as they tried to determine the cause.

"We need to make sure that we get some of the forensics back and that we follow where the evidence takes us," Riggs told WISH-TV.

U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, who represents the area, has said he had been told a bomb or meth lab explosion had been ruled out.

There's some good, new, clear pictures.

By all other official accounts, this part is totally untrue.
All available photographic and video evidence shows four total structures with any fire involvement.

No, it looks like inside out to the sides.

From examining the photos and from a few details that have come out.

First of all it is obvious the building exploded outward with symmetry. Also there is no crater which rules out high explosives.

So...

it has the earmarks of a gas explosion. Which would leave no explosive residue to speak of, anyway...

details come out that the furnace was worked on, also no one as I understand it was home at the time of the explosion...

therefore...

for some reason the worked on furnace started dumping gas into the atmosphere of the home.

Modern homes of this type are pretty "tight" if the windows are all closed and since this was late at night, no one smelled any gas.

So the house fills up with gas.

Lot's of homes that have gas heat have gas hot water heaters.

This could be what set off the explosion. Gas water heater lights up and sets off the gas in the house.

If not a gas hot water heater another possible source of a spark could be a refrigerator (they have relays) having a small spark as it cycles.

Most probably what happened.

TSA drones, HAARP, evil Mossad agents, or sinkholes 1000 miles away not withstanding.

it was a swamp gas from a vent on Venus explosion. Set off by a spark from the radar reflector on the bottom of a weather balloon.

or... it could have been a tomato plant doing an experiment that went wrong?

Makes sense. The gas permeated the entire house and that explains why the entire house is gone and clearly blown outwards.

This I thought as well.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — As investigators try to determine what caused a deadly explosion that ravaged an Indianapolis subdivision, an expert says people shouldn't be alarmed by a homeowner's suggestion that his faulty furnace could be to blame.

Investigators have been looking at gas meters and pipelines as they try to figure out what happened Saturday night when a blast killed two people, obliterated two homes and left dozens more uninhabitable.

John Shirley and his ex-wife own one of the homes leveled in the explosion. Shirley, 50, of Noblesville, said his daughter told him recently that the furnace had gone out in the house she shares with her mother and her mother's boyfriend. He said his daughter told him the furnace was working again, but he wondered if a leak from the furnace could have led to the explosion that killed a couple next door. No one was in Shirley's home at the time of the blast, he said.

Scott Davis, president and principal engineer of GexCon US, an explosion investigation firm in Bethesda, Md., said it's hard to believe a furnace could cause the damage seen in the Indianapolis neighborhood. He noted that most furnaces have multiple safety switches that must be triggered before any gas is used.

"For a furnace to allow that much gas through, you'd have to defeat many of the safety features," he said.

Public Safety Director Troy Riggs said investigators will treat the area as a crime scene until they rule out foul play. Local and federal investigators say it's too soon to rule on a cause but are slowly weeding out some possibilities.
