The National Park Service, administered by the Dept of the Interior askes us to "PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS. THE ANIMALS WILL GROW DEPENDENT ON HANDOUTS AND WILL NOT LEARN TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES."

They should be in charge of food stamps and welfare!
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Reducing $50 in foodstamps isn't that bad.

If someone boys vegetables and certain fruits, legumes, rice, some protein and condiments, they can feed a family of 4 on around $200 a month.

People just won't be able to add their $4 dollar chocolate bars with their grocery cart or their $30 shrimp cocktail.

Lots of people on this site all gung-ho to point out how Romney would have been just as bad, banksters this, politicians that, blah blah blah. They miss the big point though. Whether or not Romney would have been just as bad, right or wrong the public perception is Romney = work and responsibility for self, Obama = handouts and nanny state.

This is the first election in my lifetime that there was no pretense to hide that difference and the people voted for nanny state.
 Quoting: No Dhimmi

What I'm about to post has been posted in the past.

It is true.

Some will blow it off or disagree because you can't or won't accept this but:

The reason is that in a poor economy with jobs going to China most people that have the perception of Romney and Obama that you stated heard the GOP debates about cutting benefits and welfare yet wanting to expand wars.

Don't argue with me, don't deny it. Maybe that reasoning is wrong maybe it's right but THAT is they way people see it whether you agree with it or not.

It's not simply work ethics, it's much more than what you are trying to paint it.

That's an estimate. Some could be reduced more, others cut off.

It doesn't sound that bad, but if I had 130 dollars a month for food and 50 of it was cut, it would be huge.

You make good points and I agree most people could eat for a lot less money.

More people could eat for much less if the basics were given to people, along with instructions how to cook it.

It would eliminate many of the scammers who sell their benefits and help those who need it.

So many things could have helped, but when people have been conditioned to rely on someone, and don't know how to prepare anything unless it comes in a box to microwave, it's going to be a huge problem that could have and should have been addressed before so many people are jobless, homeless, or elderly, with food prices rising weekly.

Somehow, I doubt that Ohio is alone in the issue of food banks needing food and it does seem odd timing to make the announcement.

Ohio food charity need up 45 percent in three years

A difficult employment climate and increased costs for daily necessities led Ohio food banks to distribute 45 percent more food in fiscal year 2012 than they did just three years earlier, during the height of the recession.

The 164 million pounds of food that Ohio food banks provided to pantries and other charities last year rose at a pace that is alarming officials throughout the state. Ohio’s food banks sent out 113 million pounds of food in fiscal year 2009, according to the Ohio Association of Foodbanks.

The increase matches the trend of greater “food insecurity” in Ohio, which is growing at a pace nearly unmatched throughout the country. From 2009-11, an average of 15.5 percent of Ohio households were “food insecure,” which means they did not have enough access to food at some point during the year. That was an increase of 6.4 percentage points from 1999-2001, which tied Ohio with Arkansas for No. 3 nationally in fastest growth rate.

Such need mixed with an uncertain economic outlook have food charity officials bracing for more increases while hoping for continued generosity.

“The need is still going up,” she said.

Whatever the method, November and December combine for a period of increased need during the holidays.

“It’s tougher this time of year, even emotionally,” said Keith Williamson, regional director for Catholic Charities Southwest Ohio and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign and Logan counties.

“Holidays are supposed to be a time to think about celebration, not think about, ‘Boy, I can’t give a gift because I need to find food for the table.’ That’s an emotional issue.”

Nearly as concerning as the amount of food is the makeup of homes asking for help.

“We’re seeing households with more people in them,” Hamler-Fugitt said. “There might be a matriarch or patriarch with a job or bringing in Social Security or a pension, and they might take in adult children or others to help them. Those are more people to care for, which stretches what they have.”

Pantries and community kitchens like the House of Bread are seeing such changes. More families with children are coming to get the lunches, which the facility serves at a clip of about 220 per day.

“Most think that people with houses go to pantries, so they can take it home,” Bennett said. “We’re seeing them as well. The food only goes so far.”

“About 40 percent of people in our mobile food pantry program have never been to a food pantry before,” Williamson said. “It’s less intimidating to ask for help when it’s in that form, I think. They don’t feel as embarrassed as they might (going to a food pantry building).”

Foodbanks are also collecting and distributing much more fresh fruits and vegetables, responding to statistics that show up to 40 percent of those who seek food aid are in poor health. The Foodbank provided 531,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2011. Just in the first three months of 2012, it distributed 713,000 pounds.

The state has federal guidelines. The USDA oversees the food stamp program.

The "standard utility allowance" was decreased by 166. dollars.

The state dept. of Job and Family Services tried to appeal the decision, but was denied by USDA. From the Toledo Blade article:

“This is a federal issue,” said Joel Potts, executive director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Directors’ Association. “It is what it is. They have a formula. ... We just think it is going to be really hard on families and individuals. They will see significantly less money starting in January.”

Man oh man! You guys are really on a mission to make sure nothing gets done about this!

In order to do something about a problem.. you need the facts and you need to know who the right people to confront are.

Otherwise... you are blowing hot air into our atmosphere for no reason!

Ohio legislators are the ones who would dictate how much is given for support to those in need, in Ohio.

The Feds have nothing to do with this.

Fed bashing will get you nowhere fast.

Go after the group responsible and you may have a leg to stand on when you confront them with "factual" info.

Blaming food stamps and social security for what's missing from your paycheck and the budget is like watching your house burn down and blaming an ant carrying off a crumb. Cut all the social security and food stamps and watch the streets fill with dying homeless people but you won't see one penny more in your paychecks. If you want your money back, take the jobs away from the corrupt officials. Shut down the 3 (and now 4) letter agencies, and most importantly the central bankers and the military-industrial empire war machine that sucks away the trillions.

Only complete fucking retards blame anything on this economy on the crumbs that go to the poor.

Only weak, pathetic idiots who are powerless blame the poor for their own failure. But then it's easier for you douchebags to blame the poor because it's easy for you to push them around but you would piss your panties in the face of the real crooks who steal your wealth.

I don't think Ohio actually went for Obama. He felt very exposed doing all that vote fraud, especially as it's being discovered now. He's mad. When he's mad at someone, he gets revenge. He hunts them down.

And that is why he has decided to punish Ohioans who "should" have voted for him, but did not with sufficient reliability. He was paying them good money for their support, and they didn't perform adequately on election day, causing him a lot of trouble and some risk.

I live in Ohio. I work at a grocery store. We are lucky, my husband has a good job.

Young people like 18-early 20's are using food stamps.

WTF? Really?

Jobs are hard to find, and not at the pay you wanted but you can deal with it. Stop buying energy drinks, Sarbucks canned drinks and pop.

I know times are different. But how much financial responsibility do you have when your 18? There have been times in my life when I have had 3 jobs to make ends meet. Pay your bills, then make sure you have gas money and what is left is money for food.

I really, really do not like paying for someones food (via tax dollars) who has not paid into the system.

In the same regard, if you have fallen on hard times, that's what it is there for.

I have seen parents come through the line and squeak out as much value as they could get when using food stamps. These are people whom either are just barly are working or are out of a job.

I don't mind giving people a hand with my tax dollars, but I really can't stand giving hand outs.

I really wish Ohio would leave the elderly alone. They have worked all of their lives and paid into a system all that was supposed to take care of them. I have no illusions that it will be there for me.

Some of them do. Abuses abound, as shown from this investigative report from nearly a year ago.

There are good and bad in anything. In the economic times we're in, it's not so easy to determine "the type of people" who are on welfare.

There have been some heartwarming posts on here by people who get food stamps because they absolutely have to, but don't want to. People who value and appreciate them. They use them wisely and provide good made from scratch food for their families.

My heart goes out to each and every one of them. My disgust goes out to the ones mentioned in this article, not only for what they're doing, but for how it's affecting those who are truly down and out and see no alternative.

Ohio food stamp recipients waste millions of U.S. tax dollars buying guns, drugs, beer
02/20/2012

Joseph said $3.8 million in food stamp fraud has been uncovered in the Cleveland area over the last few years. Yost estimates that food stamp fraud costs Ohioans about $90 million per year.

"Right now, the controls are little too flimsy,” he said, about how the state maintains the SNAP program.

However, Yost and Joseph said they are more concerned about the benefits failing to reach impoverished children.

“There are children who just aren't eating because mom and dad want to get beer and cigarettes instead,” Joseph said.

If true, once Obama gets word of this it'll get fixed ASAP.
What the article doesn't put into account is the rising food prices, that seems relative to the equation. I have a feeling that the least among us will not go a day hungery next year, because of the Feds anyway..
