ANTIVIRUS PIONEER, John McAfee is WANTED for MURDER!

All computer related security companies are undergoing transformation new, and I'm sure this "incident" is related to that transformation in some way.

Check out the board of directors of most of these companies. Notice an emerging pattern?

This smells like a settup from the get go.. Mr. Mcafee has been having many problems with local Politicians due to the fact that he does not contribute money to any of them..therefore they cause many problems for him and have gone as far as to ask him to leave the country...This smells like someone from the political arena in that country has devised a deadly way of getting rid of Mr. Mcafee.

There is some truth to that. When I was living in the philippines, one of the few other Americans living on the Southern Island of Mindanao, invited his son from the USA to visit him.

Son killed him.... The situation was hushed and the entire issue just kind of went away, no one in the government over there wanted to talk about it.

That was one of about 10 questionable ex-pat deaths (various countries) and disappearances in ahort span of time - out of a few dozen total ex-pats) that had the rest of us a little paranoid.

McAfee turned into a drug-addled weirdo which is probably why McAfee AV is such a shit product

Mcafee is a resource hog and its definition updates are often worse than the viruses they are intended to catch.

Mcafee has often paid my bills (inadvertently) so I guess I shouldn't be too upset.

Kaspersky is the one you want.

As much as they want your money, they also don't want trouble... I never ONCE paid a bribe or participated in anything questionable with a government official when living overseas. It takes time, but eventually they figure it out and leave you alone.

Either that, or you beat the crap out of one of them and that sends a pretty good message too... I had a guy from the transportatio office refuse to deal with me because I would not pay him off... we got into an argument and he came at me swinging. I had to beat the shit out of him to get him to stop. Never had a problm after that... within hours, all my cars were registered and all was okay.

THIS... is as likely as not in Latin countries where immigrants with money who do not voluntarily pay into the traditional system, which is often called corruption by people from the US, (but which has its good and bad sides when viewed objectively). By not paying into the system he was setting himself up for a certain demise.

When one learns how the society works with these expected donations one finds that it is usually quite affordable, less expensive perhaps than the official gangsters cost people in the US, but one must take these things with granted, and do it showing good heart, or one is likely to offend the powers that be, and run into problems. Word.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter if they speak English, but Latin cultures are different, and if one does not learn adapt to those cultures, one may meet up with unwanted fates.

McAfee's defense: "I was infected by a Trojan horse which took control of my behavior and caused me to murder ..."

Culture is most dependent upon DNA. In Belize, the cultures are so mixed that the organized, fair nature of the Anglo-Saxons is usually drowned by the ensemble of Latin/Black/Mayan mix.

Killing malware was too hard for him i guess, McAfee sucks nuts..

I've never liked the McAfee line of anti-virus software. Too system intensive, hogs way too much RAM and processor power. It restricts your control over your system waaay to much, it's way too intrusive, and every time it actually found a virus, it's not able to get rid of it because of some permissions problem.

But I wonder if he really did what they say he did or if he just uncovered some line of code or the origins of some virus that the powers that be don't want him to know about.

Could be, but they are also based on practicalities based on the scale of size of government. Belize has always been a pirate base historically, so that says something of the culture. A person can survive, and even thrive among pirates too, but only if they adapt to the culture.

The thing is, when some official in a Latin country comes needing a donation for the community fiesta, or if it is a cop who pulled you over on the side of the road who wants you to slip some money between the pages of his log-book to let you go,

1) First you should be well informed by some trusted local contacts how much is correct to offer. To offer too much money is one of the worst things to do. In my region for example, some otherwise unimportant traffic stop by police is usually settled by equal to about $8usd, so the "gringo" may offer double, like equal to $16usd, but always in pesos.

Even if you've done something wrong it may be better to not pay more than a thousand pesos, because at those levels they probably will take the money but not let you off the hook anyhow.

2) When a bribe is being suggested by either party, it is an important moment to try to get personal, either briefly or more in depth, asking the official about their family and personal life... and difficulties. Look them straight in the eyes with a heartfelt look. "Man that's a bitch, I really feel for you. Here's the money for your daughters orthodontia work", and you would be surprised how a murder charge in Belize might suddenly drop for lack of evidence.

That's kind of how things may work in Latin countries. It has it's advantages and disadvantages, depending.

edit -(but it's not a pretext for lawlessness, those who don't abide the laws and traditions might get off the hook sometimes, but usually end up getting punished somehow)

Actually i've been in the business 18 years with 10 certifications and regularly test them.

McAfee and Symantec both pick up virii that each other do not once in a blue moon. These two compete for first place and have for over a decade now. They go back and forth for first place. Some years they are so close in detection it soley comes down to which uses less resources.


Kaspersky comes next

The rest are all garbage.

*edit, I'll put Microsoft Security Essentials at forth, then the rest are garbage. I'm actually pretty impressed with this newcomer.

McAfee has never been a resource hog except 2010. Most Norton products are resource hogs, Symantec proper are usually good with resources. I use a mix of Symantec EPP v11 and McAfee Enterprise on my network, McAfee Enterpriese uses like no resources, it's amazing. Most businesses with a decent budget uses Symantec EPP, most businesses where budget is an issue uses Kaspersky.

I would recommend McAfee to home users and Symantec EPP to all organizations.

One more edit. Webroot Spysweeper is solid as hell to, i'd put that above Kaspersky.

I use MSE and I go to many torrent sites. I never had any problems.

How timely. Just this morning my McAfee Site Advisor started blocking my access to GLP... and has now quit. Actually... I think the competition is fucking things up. or maybe BING Rewards scum still playing games.
