Most report "an unusual event" and shut down. I am on this fence if this is a good thing or not. On the one hand I do not like the sound of "an unusual event", on the other hand I would like to see them all shut down before something worse happens. |

Quoting: Plenty Paws You could shut them all down today and you would still have to supply power to them for cooling for more than 30 years. Reactors are dirty machines. I'm tired of waiting, somebody push the damn button already! Keep your 72 virgins, give me one old biker chick. |

Quoting: Plenty Paws Nuke plants shut down all the time, for various reasons. They are HYPER about safety and contigencies. A backup for the backup and all that. I work in the Nuc industry. The standard for any safety system is, what is the probability of failure in 10 to the 7th power per year? If it is one, they shut the plant down. |

Does not matter .. there will be enough power provided to cool them .. which means that there will be no power for you. Stay away from grid infrastructure .. cause it is "managed GO" that will happen this winter. The TPTB know fully well that when to many plants blow they are also toast. |

Japan totally lacks the safety culture the NRC and the Nuclear industry in the US has. The GE engineer team that built the failed reactors in Japan resigned when they found out where the reactors were located (in a tsunami zone) and that their backup power relied on land lines. |
