White House deluged with petitions for secession

I don't see it happening without an economic collapse, or years of civil strife aimed at the elite and their intelligentsia.

A tax revolt with enough steam could be a tipping point. The government is broke. 15 million people abandoned the system during the last election.

It makes sense, really. We are more divided than ever. Ultimately, it will come down to economics as the bankers will just tell their government what to do.

Texas is near 24,000!!!

Not a good idea to sign any petition or sign up with any political group anywhere.

The problem is right in their own state.

Petition to DC will only send them a list of names of dissidents.

There is also a petition for Obama to create a "Do Not Kill List."

Sounds like people are creating the list for him...

That is where I see the issue as well.... 10 years from now, maybe worth a discussion. If it ever happens, it will be a very sad day...

I can give you a two word answer, which is more than what you deserve.

Secession is crazy talk.

Secession won't happen, but it is a reflection of the level of dissatisfaction with Washington DC from people across the country

Divisions and tensions will get worse next year as the economy slows down under the weight of higher taxes and higher health care costs

I hope I'm wrong...

These petitions will be ignored. They will receive no real media attention and life will go on as the gubmint sees fit.....just my prediction.

I think just as obvious (or it should be) is the data mining that is going on with the WH website.

Signing these petitions definitely leaves the footprints behind.

You need to go through your state capital and not the federal government if you want your state to leave the union.

I know someone who signed a "no nukes" petition in 2000...and after 9/11 found herself on the national No-Fly list. Everytime she went to travel, she was pulled aside for questioning, even though she had never joined any radical group, and didn't have a criminal record nor a foreign sounding name

she finally was told that people who signed any kind of "peace" organization petition or anti-war group were considered potential risks to the US military

right or wrong, thats the way it happens.

Of course, a majority of the citizenry are interested in returning to the "freedoms" we enjoyed in the recent past. The dangers are that, until specific language is recorded to determine the path, direction, and ultimate destination - you may well be trading off for another government that has even greater desire to influence and control your life.

I live in Texas and I'll say this. Every politician on the far right has went down the ol' Secession Road. It gets your name out to fringe groups etc..I don't have a problem with that, Texans have heard this same song and dance for over 150 years now. It goes in one ear and out the other.

The ability to create the petitions is something that the Obama administration promised and delivered on because:

“We want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.”

True secession isn't something you petition. It is something you DECLARE. YOU DON'T ASK FUCKIN PERMISSION TO SECEDE. You just do it.

These petitions are all jokes. IF you read them they're all just copy and pastes of eachother, with the state name changed.

The white house will give a boilerplate responce to the first to reach 25,000, and repeat it for the others.

It's true that what would happen after secession has not been thought out by most people signing these petitions

however, that has never stopped humans in the past from calmly embarking on all kinds of world changing misadventures, such as the last civil war, the First world war and the Iraq war

the problem is that reason has nothing to do with it when people get pushed far enough, are desperate enough or filled with enough emotion to override the desire to maintain the status-quo...or the status-quo is abruptly changed and the social contract renogiated without apparent consent

As a student of history, you can see all the necessary ingredients for combustion in the current situation...and building

It's not just in the USA however, it is clearly similar in Europe and probably brewing in China as well

I think 2013 will be the beginning of an extremely rocky era for these increasingly autocratic yet highly indebted nation states.

How they manage to contain restless populations while trying to balance their budget shortfalls should be interesting
