Accident in uranium enrichment facility in Finland - nearest lakes already radioactive
Today's press conference held at STUK's Director General said that the situation could get any worse, because the top-toxic gypsum pool is depleted environment. On Friday, recorded according to the measurement of water leakage contained uranium would kill more than half a million people.

Radiation measurements published on Friday, show that on Wednesday 7.11. Talvivaara measured water discharges three kilometers from the spill area exceed seven times the WHO limits set by the act. The concentrations of uranium have risen rapidly.

I don't think you can really call that enrichment. Ore separation is a better term, enrichment generally refers to the thing with the centrifuges that Saddam got hung for.

I guess Finns aren't receive enough information and actually there is some sort of media coverag about the ammount of uranium. It is estimated about 6200kg of uranium has been leaked into the environment. That is 120x of "Little boy" nuke

Since the media is not allowed in almost a week to follow the evolution of the situation in a leaking sewage pool, in the water, the amount of information kipsisakan almost impossible to confirm press reports or on the basis of reliable silminnäkikähavaintojen. Similarly, Talvivaara's information has been inadequate and contradictory in content regarding the pool of spilled waste and operation of the quarry.

Kainuun Sanomat estimated 6.11. large amount of leakage as the new 5000-6000 cubic meters per hour, which allows the kipsisakan the whole volume of 1.2 million cubic meters of spilled environment of leakage past the start of approximately 9 days. About the pool is low to further strengthen the Kainuu messages in a situation o Saturday to 10.11.

it's not a uranium enrichment facility. It's a common mine and there is some uranium in the soil. The bigger problem are heavy metals in the water that pollute the soil and water..

So are you in agreement this is very bad? Enough uranium leaked to kill half a million or is that not true?

Re: Accident in uranium enrichment facility in Finland - nearest lakes already radioactive
I'm a career physicist so I thought I'd comment on this. The hysteria in this thread (and in our media) is getting out of all proportion.

That is not to say that this is a totally harmless leak. Uranium is a toxic metal and this leak will have to be cleaned up. The radiological danger is, however, greatly exaggerated by the media and militant Greens.

Firstly, it's not pure Uranium (U) that's pouring out. It's watery sludge that contains trace amounts of U. Secondly, it is U isotope 238 (U238), meaning that the radiological hazard is small.

U238 is the most common U isotope in the soil. It's everywhere! It is an alpha-emitter (i.e. it emits Helium nuclei without the two electrons usually associated with He), meaning that as long as you don't drink it, eat it or get it under your skin or into your lungs, it's harmless. It does not penetrate or damage skin. You can hold an alpha emitter in your hand or wear it on a necklace for your entire life, and it won't harm you. U238 does not emit the more energetic and penetrating beta-radiation (bad), gamma-radiation (worse) or neutrons (worst), nor does it spontaneously transform into more radioactive isotopes within our lifetime (its half-life is 4.468 billion years).

U238 cannot start or sustain a chain reaction even at bulk concentrations, so there is absolutely no chance of a runaway nuclear reaction.

Radiologically the danger is equivalent to living in a house built on soil that releases radioactive Radon-gas (222Rn is also an alpha-emitter) - a common practice in Finland. In such a house, a simple precaution like good ventilation takes care of it. Outdoors the dose is negligible. Smoking exposes you to more radiation.

On the other hand, U238 is a toxic heavy metal. This is the main danger in the leak. The good news is that as such it is easy to filter out from drinking water (normal water purification plants deal with it) and clean up by soil removal. It is also readily absorbed by the soil, meaning that the Uranium won't travel far from the site. Furthermore, since the leak is far away from dense population and ground water areas (=drinking water), it is well contained.

The only real fallout from this incident is political and economical.

Very curious,

the deemed site was supposed to be the site for 'permanent disposal', in a world-wide first...

it again displays the fallacy of 'nuclear' clean and green and safety...

what do we do with something that outlives you, yourself, and your grandchildren x+42.....

top it off, we have 80% of world wide nukes now going off-line.. got to ask why... these things are as old as your grand-parents cars... they were serviced, and made redundant... also remember you can't shut down a nuke plant for 25 years to cool it.. more over, there is no-where.. nowhere to put the waste... we shit on ourselves and shrug...

18 months later and we all sold bullshit for breakfast..... one eye open......... welcome to your doom.......

that is all

peace

What are you talking about? The pool was no permanent storage or disposal (burial) site for uranium.

The whole purpose of the pool was to absorb uranium and other trace metals - which are inevitable byproducts of a nickel mine like Talvivaara - in gypsum so that it can be collected and reprocessed later on. Otherwise the nickel mining operation would have just released the uranium and other toxic metals into the nature.

The mine has nothing to do with nuclear industry, except that they later discovered that they could make money with the mining waste that they would have collected anyway.

So, yes, the pool was shoddily built, but it had a "green" purpose. What else would you have done with the byproducts from nickel production?
