In the "old days" back in the 70's and 80's - one did not talk about your political convictions at work. EVER.

You might well be on the opposite side of any issue from your boss and/or the senior management of the company and that could end up getting you not promoted or even let go in a pinch.

Young execs were taught to NEVER have even a party bumper sticker on their car or have a donkey or elephant anything or near their desk. You just didn't talk about your political involvement. AT ALL. EVER.

If you happened to be a party worker, and spent time campaigning for one candidate or another, then great, but again you kept your mouth shut about it. If you ran into a subordinate while doing campaign work, you were always cautious and asked him / her to keep quiet about your party affiliation. If you ran into your boss because your boss was there, doing the same thing, then it was just a stroke of good luck and nothing more. But it would NEVER be mentioned in the office. NEVER!

Certain professions like Wall Street banking/brokerage firms and various law firms were known for being primarily democratic or primarily republican. You tried your best not to be hired by one that was the opposite of your own affiliations.

Bye the way - this and not talking about your salary, or money in general, and not talking about fellow co-workers at all were considered just good manners. A gentleman or a lady would never had broached such subjects while at the office/work/etc.

Today in the workplace, it would seem things have changed ... and not for he better, me thinks!
