They were all cutting beetle killed trees (standing dead) These produce dry sawdust as opposed to the wet dust that sawmills are designed to deal with. Was that mill cutting beetle killed timber? Sawmills burning is still very common here where I live. Mostly it is caused by electrical issues. A few were arson. But as I said before of all the mills I have known to burn ( and that is a good few) I had never heard of one exploding. This due to the fact that the saw "dust" in most mills is wet. In some mills the water pours out of the log as the main saw cuts it. In the winter the sawdust blowers can cause the whole mill to have to shut down so the frozen solid dust can be cleaned from the blower. However it seems that in B.C. there has been a few sawmills that did explode, much like a feed mill. [link to www.huffingtonpost.ca] I have also know of "fire" in saw dust piles. These are from "spontaneous combustion". Much like a hay barn burning down because someone put up hay that was not well cured. The wet sawdust breaking down builds up heat ( kind of like a compost heap) and it will get hot enough to cause it to start burning. I have known these to burn (smolder) for weeks before someone got around to digging into the heap and clearing out the hot spots. |
