When all is said and done, Christmas is like weddings and funnerals. It is the only time families and externded families make an effort to get together. To me, this is what it is about. It is the only holiday I celecrate. The only time when I go all out and buy things.

It amuses me how so many folks feel the need to tell us that Jesus wasn't born on or near December 25th.

As if that makes a bit of difference.

We don't know for sure when Jesus was born. Big whup! I believe he was born in the fall because whoever decided to take a census would have waited until the crops were harvested and the taxes paid.

December 25th is the day we celebrate Christmas. I don't care if the Catholic church had decided on January 25, July 25th - whatevah!

Since most of us agree it's December 25th and that is the day Christian churches celebrate it, then that is the day we celebrate it. Period.

It does make a difference, because you are complaining that your "christian" holiday is being turned politically correct, when it wasn't even a christian holiday to begin with.

You are being hypocritical, and sometimes you need to be told off your high horse.
If you have a right to complain, so will I.

Re: Went to Target to get a birthday card today...
I only read the first two posts, but I have to say that ten years ago I picked up their sale flyer and it was Christmas time, they had much Christmas merchandise advertised such as artificial trees, decorations, gift wrap, toys etc. and the word "Christmas" did not appear once in the entire ad, they called Christmas trees "Holiday Trees" and the whole thing turned me off so much I really haven't wanted to give them my money ever since.

The web site VDare.com has a yearly "War on Christmas" competition with news stories about kids getting kicked out of school for mentioning Christmas, companies threatening their employees if they use the word, etc. I used to read it every year but it made me so angry I had to stop.

VDare.com "WAR ON CHRISTMAS" articles:

Well obama did say a while ago this is no longer a christian nation. "We are no longer a christian nation, at least not just, we are a jewish nation, a muslim nation, and a buhdist nation, and a hindu nation, and a nation of non believers."

I just went on Target's website and found at least 15 cards that are religious themed and are sold in stores. There are many more if you include the online only options. bsflag

Fake outrage. So much fun!!! Maybe you should spend some time actually sharing the good news of Jesus rather than worrying about what you can buy at shitty big box stores that no one is forcing you to shop at.

Re: Went to Target to get a birthday card today...
As an atheist I find this funny. Look man, "Christian" people are a plurality in the US, so it was most likely a christian who decided which cards to order. Maybe they were following the teachings of the man Jesus, who said things like don't loudly proclaim your own righteousness? Does it really matter that cards for a state sanctioned holiday (adapted from an entirely different religion by the way) are not christian?

How bout instead of a christian card, you give that 2.50 to a charity of your choice?

Re: Went to Target to get a birthday card today...
Actually, Christmas was conveniently dropped over a previously existing pegan holiday called Winter Solstice, in which people celebrated the changing of the seasons.

December 21-22 has always been a holiday for any human culture in the Northern Hemisphere because it's roughly the night where the sun is down the longest, ie. the longest night. This made it a good night to celebrate, because it's the turning point in winter where the sun starts to come back.

So... in other words... the Christian religion is merely renting space with a pre-existing holiday.

If you want more Jesus cards, order 'em up or something. I don't get pissed when I can't find cards referencing the fact we've made it over the hump of winter with our lives in tact.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27622736

I agree that we are "renting space with a pre-existing holiday" ... no quarel there.

I think what is missed in this discussion is tradition!
Christmas.. IS a tradition. So when we say Merry Christmas, it has more to do tradition than religion, for many of us.

Here's hoping you have a Very Merry Christmas! hf

CHRISTmas isn't a CHRISTian?? Okie dokie.

Look - I don't give a fuck if pagans or anyone else also use the same time period for whatever they might be celebrating - more power to them. The pagans and no one else OWN the calendar.

Christians can decide when they want to have their holy days. They don't need to ask pagans, Jews, Hindus or anyone else if the days they choose are all right or not.

Re: Went to Target to get a birthday card today...
I'll agree that political correctness is a bit much these days - if someone wants a card with a manger, let them have manger - if someone wants reindeers, let them have reindeers. Don't underestimate sales figures - if a store thinks it will sell, it will offer it for sale - no matter what's on the card.

BUT, let's get real about Christmas - it's an overlay (hijack) of much earlier pagan celebrations and it was done that way so that the pagans would more easily (in part) convert to Christianity. Does no one study history anymore!!!

Christmas isn't a Christian holiday. It is a pagan holiday in honor of the demon god Mithras. And there never was a Nativity scene. There were no wise men at the manger. Only shepherds. The astrologers didn't show up until Jesus was a young child living in a house. The story is so full of lies. Jesus didn't even celebrate his birthday. No Jews did that as it was a pagan custom.
