Actually, Christmas was conveniently dropped over a previously existing pegan holiday called Winter Solstice, in which people celebrated the changing of the seasons.

December 21-22 has always been a holiday for any human culture in the Northern Hemisphere because it's roughly the night where the sun is down the longest, ie. the longest night. This made it a good night to celebrate, because it's the turning point in winter where the sun starts to come back.



So... in other words... the Christian religion is merely renting space with a pre-existing holiday.

There's been a few time's I've said to waitresses and other people "Happy Holidays" and got berated "IT'S CHRISTMAS!, NOT ANYTHING ELSE!" How the hell was I supposed to know if they celebrated christmas, hanukkah, the solstice etc. And it IS a "holidays" (plural) because of New Years. I was just being nice. touchy touchy. Lighten up.

And since I lean toward the earth religions and celebrate solstice, how come they don't have any Happy Winter Solstice cards anywhere? There is Freedom of religion in this "free" country, isn't there? Should I be pissed nobody respects or recognizes MY religious beliefs?

While in Europe it's called Basque, Easter is based on Esther, the goddess of fertility, who's symbols were the rabbit, for obvious reasons and the egg (re: the hormone estrogen). Christs chronological birthday is calculated to be in June or September. It got changed to convert Pagans to Christianity easier, since in Europe they celebrated the shortest day and longest night of the year as a start of longer days and more sun and the end of long hard winter (and to break up the harsh winter with a day of celebration for the children). Then comes Easter, the spring equinox, the time in spring to start planting crops and celebrate their fertility and growth.
