Why is there no Direct Democracy?
Why cant we vote on each issue individually? There should be a system online or something so everyone can just vote on anything the gov or whatev wants to make legal illegal.

..because people like yourself would allow on-line voting to determine my family's future..in addition having 51% dictate to 49% is a more flawed system...enjoy gridlock, it also keeps stupid laws from passing...like if 51% voted on-line to ban on-line voting..would it count or not ?

Re: Why is there no Direct Democracy?
The argument is that 51% could enslave the other 49%.

However, we basically have that now. 47% do not pay taxes. 20% pay taxes, but they pay taxes on a check that comes no more than 1 step away from a government source.

There is no gridlock in D.C. in regard to this 67%. cant even put bush tax cuts in or repeal. wont even allow sequestration to happen or be repealed.

can gets kicked unless you do not work for the government and owe a couple of hundred dollars.

In ancient Greece, they had a direct democracy. It worked great while it lasted. But, power likes to incorporate into a few individuals. If you voted on all the laws as citizen/owners of the country, you would take power from the few. The powerful will NEVER LET THAT HAPPEN.

I disagree. If a pure democracy were to develop, the country would have to first divide into two camps of opposite idiology and form two separate countries, lest a breeding war begin.

Re: Why is there no Direct Democracy?
In Switzerland they do use direct democracy in some cases like when passing some laws. Also Island did have direct democracy when they voted against banks. Only good results have come from direct democracy votes. This is not suitable for everything but in most cases it has been proven to work.

Re: Why is there no Direct Democracy?
Democracy cannot exist, a some point a decision at higher levels has to be made by a group or a single individual, there isn't a mass vote on ever decision that is made.

Many people vote based upon limited information, or very selective information which has been provided. The system still has unnamed civil servants, and permanent members in the White White whom are not voted in.

Re: Why is there no Direct Democracy?
There will one day soon be this direct denocracy.. as soon as there is a Muslim majority.

Democracy to vote for a president is OK

Democracy to change the Constitution is NOT.
