Syrian jet resumes bombing rebel area near Turkey

A Syrian jet bombed a rebel-held region near the border with Turkey for a second day on Tuesday, killing at least one person and wounding three others, an official said.

An Associated Press video journalist saw the jet strike an area around the Syrian town of Ras al-Ayn, just across the border from the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar, and plumes of smoke could be seen rising into the sky.

The jet struck an area near the Turkish border "five times within a period of 10 minutes," according to an official from the Ceylanpinar mayor's office. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. Turkish ambulances scurried to the border to carry Syrians wounded in the attack to Turkish hospitals.

The watchdog also reported fresh bombings by warplanes of Ras al-Ain, in northeastern Syria on the Turkish border, where it said at least 16 people had died on Monday in air strikes and shelling of rebel positions.

The air strikes have sent a new wave of civilians pouring across the frontier to the Turkish side, adding to the 9,000 refugees who already fled late last week when rebels overran the town, an AFP photographer said.

With all Arab states endorsing the new rebel government in Syria, Assad is now desperate to expand the conflict to try and create a common enemy for Syrians to rally against.
