BIG FLOODS IN NORTH ITALY AND VENICE!!! FLOODS ALLREADY IN ROME AND 5 DEATHS!!!
Flood in Italy on Sunday, 11 November, 2012 at 18:36 (06:36 PM) UTC.

Description
Floodwaters have drenched most of Venice and led to the evacuation of 200 people in Tuscany, as bad weather hit northern Italy. In Venice itself, heavy rains and winds from the south triggered "acqua alta" (high water) and 70 per cent of the city was flooded, with sea levels reaching a peak of 1.5 metres above normal before receding slightly, they said. In Tuscany, around 200 people were evacuated because of heavy rains that flooded homes and caused mudslides, local officials said. The most affected region was the province of Massa and Carrara, which produces the famous Carrara marble. In Massa di Carrara alone, some 50 people were evacuated and a car was carried away by an overflowing river, but the couple in the vehicle were saved by firefighters. The authorities have urged the local population to avoid going into the streets and to stay in the the upper floors of their homes. In Pisa, some streets have been without electricity following the floods. In the large Tuscan port of Livorno, civil defence forces were on alert because of the heavy rains. In Liguria, the region bordering Tuscany, 30 people had to be evacuated, the authorities said. In anticipation of the floods two days ago, the authorities issued warnings and planned security measures to avoid any casualties after 13 people died in Tuscany and Liguria a year ago. The bad weather was heading slowly towards the centre of the country and was set to hit Rome where civil defence forces have been put on alert.

Description
A series of strong winds, high tide, and torrential rain has caused the iconic city of Venice, Italy to flood, with Sunday’s tide reaching its sixth-highest level since 1872. Up to 70 percent of central Venice was flooded with photos showing businesses, homes, and tourist sites are covered in water, reports The Washington Post. The flooding was caused by two weather systems which combined over the Mediterranean and the Balkans, pushing wind and water up the Adriatic Sea. The resulting convergence also produced torrential rains seen in parts of northern Italy. The flooding was so bad in St. Mark’s Square that tourists donned bathing suits to swim, sitting at cafe tables under the water. There was no estimate to the amount of damage caused by the flooding, reports Reuters. Tuscany also saw torrential rains with nine inches falling in just four hours. Mayor of Massa Carrara, Tuscany, Roberto Pucci stated: “It has been devastating. I saw at least six bridges destroyed in the hills, floods, landslides, vineyards and olive groves swept away. If there hasn’t been a death it’s a miracle.” Local media reported that dozens of people were forced to take refuge on their roofs after rivers spilled over their banks in central Italy. The country’s Environment Minister Corrado Clini called for extra funding to help shore up Italy’s weather defenses, because more bad weather is expected to come through the area on Tuesday. Sunday’s incident is the fourth time Venice has flooded since 2000, creating record high water levels. The city’s environment officer believes that the latest flooding is the result of global climate change.

70% of Venice slips underwater in the worst flooding in 140 years

Posted on November 12, 2012

November 12, 2012 – VENICE - Tourists attached plastic bags to their legs or stripped off to take a dip in St Mark’s Square in Venice on Sunday as rising sea waters surged through the lagoon city. High water measuring 1.49 metres (5ft) above the normal level of the Adriatic sea came with bad weather that swept Italy at the weekend, causing floods in historic cities including Vicenza as well in the region of Tuscany 250 miles further south. Venice’s high water, or “acqua alta,” said to be the sixth highest since 1872, flooded 70% of the city and was high enough to make raised wooden platforms for pedestrians float away. The record high water in Venice – 1.94 meters in 1966 – prompted many residents to abandon the city for new lives on the mainland. Venetians bombarded Facebook with moans about the city’s weather forecasters, who had predicted just 1.2 metres of water on Saturday, before correcting their forecast at dawn on Sunday. “How come the people from the council who put out the wooden platforms were predicting 150cm?” asked Matelda Bottoni, who manages a jewelry design shop off St Mark’s Square, which floods when water reaches 105cm. “Many residents and shopkeepers had gone to the mountains for the day and did not have time to rush back.” Bottoni is so used to floods she has installed waterproof furniture and an angled floor. “I cannot keep the water out, but at least I can make sure it goes straight back out when it recedes,” she said. Matteo Secchi, a hotelier and head of a protest group, who grew up in ground floor flat in Venice and recalls splashing into water on getting out of bed, said his hotel was only safe up to 140cm. “This morning the lagoon came right into the hotel entrance, and this is not clean water – you need to mop with disinfectant twice after it goes down,” he said. “The British tourists don’t complain but the Americans can’t understand how it’s possible.” Secchi complained that a running event around the city had not been cancelled on Sunday. “As Venetians were trying to fix their homes and shops, people were running down the flooded streets splashing everyone with water,” he said. Alessandro Maggioni, the city’s assessor for public works, defended the Venice weather centre, describing the high water as “exceptional and unpredictable.” The Moses flood barrier system being built to protect the lagoon, due for completion in 2015, would have kept the city dry, he said. “Meanwhile, there is no rise in the incidence of high waters,” he said. Bottoni disagreed. “My shop now has some form of flooding 100 days a year, up from 30-40 days when I moved in just 10 years ago.” But she does not plan to leave. “I was born and raised here and will stay here for the satisfaction of being in Venice.” [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Re: BIG FLOODS IN NORTH ITALY AND VENICE!!! FLOODS ALLREADY IN ROME AND 5 DEATHS!!!
as said in other threads before... the high sea water level in Venice is NOTHING UNUSUAL........... Regrettabbly, it is just slightly increased in these days, mostly due to the scirocco wind blowing on Sunday trapping the water INSIDE the city and not letting it flow out back into the ocean (watch these maps of Venice to know what I am talking about):

Furthermore, the construction site of the MOSE (read here:
[link to en.wikipedia.org] is apparently contributing partly in trapping the water for some time inside the city.

BTW, for the "doomtards".... what about surfing in San Marco Square:

Yes, Luis.... we are currently in a weather/flooding mess....

As it occurs many times when we have heavy rain.... regrettably, a lot of buildings/villa have been build in the past in place where TODAY you would not even THINK about putting a house there.....

We've got too many landslides and other stuff going on almost EVERY time we have major rainfalls......

We will pull through..... as always

Description
Three days of heavy rains and winds have left large parts of northern and central Italy under water Tuesday, turning streets into canals and causing the collapse of a bridge as utility workers drove across. The three employees of the utility company Enel were en route to reconnect power near Grosetto, in Tuscany, when the bridge they were driving over in Umbria collapsed into the fast-moving water below. Their car plunged into the water, and they were confirmed dead. Hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes as rivers burst their banks and streets were flooded. Some were rescued from rooftops by helicopters. A fourth fatality was an elderly man whose car was swept away near the Tuscan city of Capalbio. Another half-dozen people remained missing. The rains tapered off Tuesday, and water levels began to drop. Venice reported its sixth-highest flood level since record-keeping began in 1872. The dropping water levels come after tourists were filmed swimming across Venice's famous St. Mark's Square on Monday. Around two-thirds of the city remained under water, some of it waist-deep. "I have never seen anything like it," Orbetello Mayor Monica Paffetti told Italian television. "There are stories about big floods in the past, but nothing like this."

Orbetello, in western Tuscany, was inundated. The city's streets transformed into canals and about 800 people fled their homes in the nearby village of Albinia. Thousands were left without electricity. The rains caused the soil in a rural cemetery in coastal Tuscany to erode, exposing several caskets and prompting health concerns. Nine inches of rain fell in just four hours in Tuscany, overflowing the Parmignola and Ricortola rivers. The Po River also nearly overflowed. In the Massa Carrara region in Tuscany, a couple in their car were swept away but then rescued by police and neighbors. Parts of the highway between Rome and Florence were closed because of flooding for the first time since the 1980s. Rail lines between Orbetello and Grosetto were closed. The Tiber River, which runs through the center of Rome, overflowed bike and jogging paths along its banks in the capital, though it did not cause any flooding because of high seawalls in the city. Some railway lines and roads leading into the city from the north were closed. Farther up the coast, the tourist villages of Cinque Terre, in Liguria, were severely damaged. Residents of the towns, which can be reached by foot or by boat, were worried that their homes may collapse into the sea after rains eroded the foundations, according to Italian news media. The cash-strapped Italian government was scrambling to find emergency funds. The European Union earmarked $23 million in "solidarity funds" to help with repairs to roads, electrical systems, water and sewage systems and building controls.
