Probably. We're lucky we're I am (NJ Shore), not a big FEMA presence, but a huge outpouring of people helping each other. I'm still cooking for volunteers, Nat. Guard, and others. If citizens acrossed america had stepped up to help out thier fellow citizens during Katrina, the whole superdome tragedy would never have happened. But they werent allowed to.

This is the equivalent of telling local residents to put down thier buckets and garden hoses and stop trying to put out a house fire because only the fire department is allowed to do that...and the fire trucks should arrive sometime in a week or two to handle it.

624 fema's primary function is to ensure "continuity of government"; back around 2000 only around 10% of it's manpower was connected with emergencys.

How and why can they stop communities from helping each other? Obamas whole line about Americans coming together and what not, what happened to that?

So basically, if a disaster strikes, FEMA will step in and stop you from helping your neighnor. Basically, you are on your own.

First of all, adding red tape to an emergency bogs it down, so if you want to help, you CANNOT get near FEMA. Since it was declared a federal emergency, though, they have been appointed to "handle" things.

However...no human on this planet has the right to tell you what to do UNLESS YOU GIVE THEM THE AUTHORITY TO DO SO.

If you are avoiding FEMA and heading into a wrecked neighborhood to help, and some jerkwad stops over to flash his FEMA badge, then you have to have the sheer balls to stare him down and TAKE authority.

Him: You are not authorized to be delivering food, sir.
You: Excuse me, sir, but I AM authorized. (no attitude, just plain matter of fact authority voice). Do you need my help with something?
Him: I'm going to need you to stop doing that right now...
You: Sir I require your badge number and your supervisor's name. Further interference in my personal business is going to result not only in a visit to the local sheriff, but also a complaint filed with your chain of command.
Him: (Eyeballs beginning to bug out) Sir...
You: As a matter of fact, let's go pay a visit to your supervisor right now...


If this is not getting you anywhere, pay a visit to the local sheriff and ask nicely if there is anything you can do to expedite relief efforts. I am absolutely certain that they will be happy to have your help and once you tell FEMA people that you are with an agency, they will give you less shit.

Do what the fuck you want, people, just know who is in charge at any given time. Polite authority goes a long way.

Who gives a shit what they say. They are among just one in a long number of government agencies people hate. They don't want people helping because they want to stretch the whole thing out as long as possible and make more money. They'll make even more money once they starve people, buy their property for cheap and sell it at a profit. I bet the rich dictator mayor is behind it.
