The cigarette
"The cigarette is the deadliest artefact in the history of human civilisation," says Robert Proctor of Stanford University. "It killed about 100m people in the 20th Century." But we are glad to report the cure for lung cancer remains illegal and people are being locked up and losing families every day because of it! :(

So what? They make you look cool. If it's the deadliest artifact, that's like walking around smoking a nuclear bomb.

Re: The cigarette
I quit a year ago. It can be done. My advice (if anyone is trying to quit) is to be ready for a fight everyday. Some days are easier than others. Always have your guard up though.

It's hard. It is also very possible.

Re: The cigarette
As far as I know this not smoking, or, in fact, giving it up IS NOT WHAT saves your life. Though it might make one's breath short and bring closer the time of the last breath.

Re: The cigarette
I have been smoking about 3 to 5 cigs everyday since the last two years and will most likely continue to do so. I can run faster than most smokers or non-smokers alike, am more agile and can last longer in the bed.

If you have control, you SHOULD smoke.

My experience was not the fear of losing my life, but losing ANY type of good quality of life. When you can't breathe and get winded bending over, and are tired of literally being drugged by "who-knows-what"....than it may be time.

25 years of smoking was enough for me... YMMV

I hear ya kid. Nobody could tell me anything when I was a young'n either. Why SHOULD you smoke though? That one really doesn't make sense.

AND

Almost ALL the financial portfolios of the MAJOR MEDICAL companies have huge blocks of tobacco companies stock.

So they are betting both ways that you die.

Idol1
Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Re: The cigarette
Not necessarily just about cigarettes but I learned a long time ago that when the government comes out in full force to tell you that a product is deadly harmful to your health and insists that you quit, it might actually be GOOD for you. If you think this sounds crazy, just look how our government reacts to RAW MILK with S.W.A.T. team takes downs and ORGANIC FOODS by labeling their eaters as mentally ill.

If cigarettes are SO bad for you, why do they still sell them all the while telling you TO QUIT? Make them illegal if they are that bad for us!

Like that line in 2012 "When the government tells you not to panic, THAT'S WHEN YOU RUN!", well I believe the same applies here "When the government tells you it will kill you, STOCK UP!"

And besides...cigarettes were planned as the scapegoat for cancer when the Feds realized that all the bomb detonations over those couple of decades were directly linked to the rise in cancer.

Before nuclear testing, smokers did not die from lung cancer even though half the population smoked...AFTER NUCLEAR TESTING, they needed something to blame and since 50% of the population smoked at the time, there's your scapegoat!!!
