The Interior Dept closing 1.6 million acres of fed. land slated for oil shale
The Interior Department on Friday issued a final plan to close 1.6 million acres of federal land in the West originally slated for oil shale development.

The proposed plan would fence off a majority of the initial blueprint laid out in the final days of the George W. Bush administration. It faces a 30-day protest period and a 60-day process to ensure it is consistent with local and state policies. After that, the department would render a decision for implementation.

The move is sure to rankle Republicans, who say President Obama’s grip on fossil fuel drilling in federal lands is too tight. Interior’s Bureau of Land Management cited environmental concerns for the proposed changes. Among other things, it excised lands with “wilderness characteristics” and areas that conflicted with sage grouse habitats.

Under the plan, 677,000 acres in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming would be open for oil shale exploration. Another 130,000 acres in Utah would be set aside for tar sands production.

“This is another step in the wrong direction that limits development and investment in one of the nation’s most energy-rich areas and goes against a prior government decision that would allow for research and development over a much wider geographical area. Just days after the election this decision by the administration sends negative signals to industry and capital markets at a time when we need to encourage growth and innovation in the U.S.," Porter said in a statement to The Hill.

Come on people, they are destroying our country looking for the riches of oil, while completely ignoring whether or not they should.
Nobody can predict what will happen when we start raping the land beneath our feet, but it will start out like this:

Then end very badly I'm afraid.

I'm on the fence on this issue. I have a lot of friends and brother employed by the oil and natural gas industry and their lives and futures depend on it. I am also concerned about the cause for quakes and possible water contamination, so I'm not sure what to think about all of this. I just find it funny that one minute Obama talks about wanting to be energy independent, then after the election works on plans to shut more of them down. My one friend is being laid off on Friday. popcorn

...when is someone gonna trespass on "federal" land... then be their own lawyer and ask to face their accuser in court with the deed to the property in their hand to convict them of trespassing on " federal" land...there's no such thing as being convicted of trespassing on "federal" land,if you push it your self because your accuser cant show in court with a deed proving they own it...

Would love to see that happen. I don't know why it's still illegal anyways. Like you said, they are scared of what can be done with it.

Um. Constitutionally, the government can't own property it can only manage; therefore, they can't close, reclassify, and rezone what they don't own.

We wouldn't need any pipelines if we just ran our cars and trucks on hemp oil.

We wouldn't any more stupid fucking wars either.

And all our "government" would have to do is RE-legalize hemp farming and get the fuck out of the way.

Trust me when I say you can't develop that land. Take a hard look at Northern Alberta. Its done for.

Everything is polluted. The tails ponds are second in size to the Three Gorges Dam in China. They can't deal with all the waste created.

Too bad for bussiness. Save your area and planet instead. Time they got off their asses and put up money for other sources of energy.

If 4 Little African girls can make a generator run on pee what else can we be doing. Wake up. This is good.
