More than 350,000 Americans have signed a petition to withdraw their states from the U.S.

Petiton subject: Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

Petiton text: The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

Not exactly. Alot of signatures for the respective states come from people outside of that particular state. So if say 20,000 signatures appear on a signature for a respective state, approximately half of them are from people who don't live in that state so it's not really the will or desire of that many people in that particular state.

Also 350k is a really small percentage of the approximately 313 million people in this country so impressive as it sounds, it's still basically the fringe of our society and not really "the will of the people"

In 40 years of watching elections, as a history major, I have *never* seen an election result in a flood of petition requests within days...

Not when Clinton was elected the 2nd time and many disagreed, not when Bush was elected the 2nd time and many disagreed..this is not a partisan thing, imho

it is a reflection of a deep division in the country, a sense that the government does not listen to them and worse...a belief that it useless trying to sent representatives or senators to represent them

Secession is divorce for nations, discussion of divorce is a measure of unreconcilable differences.

Let's see how this evolves in coming months. If it stops here, we're OK, if those numbers keep multiplying , worth keeping an eye on

You need to get more than 50% of the people to agree. Otherwise the country would be plunged into chaos by thousands of groups of infantile idiots who want to pick up their toys and go home when they don't get their own way.

350,000 is something around 1/10 of 1% of the population of the U.S.

In other words, who gives a shit? More people in America are wiping their asses each second. It's a number that means nothing.

..there is NO Federal petition process. The States may not leave the Union. YOU, however, as a free American citizen are free to move to any place on this planet that will have you. After the sixth article of the U.S. Constitution explicitly states the right of "freedom and independence" of the states.

In general, legal loopholes for separatism in the United States are, it's just how certain stakeholders will interpret them.

1st of all, you're Canadian, I would not expect you to understand or sympathize with any kind of rebellion (a rebellion is a fight to return to a previous form of government, vs a revolution which is to create a new form)

2nd: the US revolution was accomplished by the efforts of less than 10% of the population, many say closer to 3%

Here’s a very important set of facts about the Revolutionary War that every person who would call themselves an American should know.

During the Revolutionary War, only THREE percent of the people actually fought against Great Britain.

Only TEN percent of the citizens actively supported that three percent.

Approximately TWENTY percent considered themselves to be on the side of the Revolution, but they did not actively participate.

Towards the climatic end of the war, approximately THIRTY percent actually fought on the side of the British.

The rest of the citizens had no disposition either way. They didn't care. They didn't want anything to do with what they deemed to simply be a political issue.

Went to your link, (looking for Oregon) and all that I saw on it was for the State of Texas. Unfortunately, there were names on there (yes, they list every single name and their city/state of origin) which would most likely not count for the final tally.

I ALSO noticed that one has to "register" in order to vote. Given Obama's fascination with drones and his propensity for watching "Snuff Films" (i.e., Benghazi), there is no way that I would just hand over my information to someone who is not only capable of, but has proven that he is more than willing to send a drone through my front door. I have not forgotten that during the last Census, ALL citizens' homes were GPS'd with no understandable or believable explanation save for making it easier to aim those drones.

However, should the issue become so overwhelming and urgent that a national vote be taken, in the (relative) anunymity of the Ballot Box, I believe that a LOT of citizens WOULD vote to at least explore the possibility.

One caveat: should this actually happen, every voter MUST possess and SHOW a valid ID. Otherwise we will have 110% of eligible voters voting (!) as we did during the recent Presidential election.

Sorry, that should be "anonymity" of the Ballot Box. My apologies to the language and spelling police!

Except back in 2000, secession from "Jesus Land" was seen to be a good and noble thing

I lived in New England and I remember hearing the positive interviews with the "brave" heads of the Vermont independence movement on "Democracy Now"

I guarantee if Romney had won and Hawaii, Vermont and Oregon were the ones signing these petitions with 70,000 votes, the media would be clamoring that it was a clear sign the will of the people had been ignored

I just want there to be some consistency how these things are seen...

Actually, OP, about 5,000 people have signed ALL those petitions to make it LOOK like they're supported far more than they really are.
