Last time from the U.S. states came out in 1860 and 1861, after President Abraham Lincoln was elected. Then the civil war began.

political correctness is a doctrine.... fostered by a delusional, illogical minority...... and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media; which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Not exactly. Alot of signatures for the respective states come from people outside of that particular state. So if say 20,000 signatures appear on a signature for a respective state, approximately half of them are from people who don't live in that state so it's not really the will or desire of that many people in that particular state.

Also 350k is a really small percentage of the approximately 313 million people in this country so impressive as it sounds, it's still basically the fringe of our society and not really "the will of the people"

Just saying
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24642485

Glad I'm not the only one to note that. I find it blisteringly hypocritical that, for people who want to secede from "the nation", they sure want to make other states' business their own. Isolationist fail. lol

I'm guessing that it's more than likely a manipulation to either a. induce fear of civil war (a theme also getting laid on thick in various forms of media) or b. in the hopes of inducing other states to join on. Not surprised to see higher numbers in Texas as they were already talking secession back in 2008.

Problem with doing so, no matter how well intentioned, is that it allows for the fear mongering or a false showing of numbers of support for secessionist activities within the country. Rather like this thread's title in itself. There are not more than 350,0000 Americans who have signed one of these petitions. A number of the signers are duplicates.

I agree with you, though...if Texas wants to bail, I'd be right alongside you to showing them the door. I just also don't want to lend my support in something that I think is foolhardy and is just a mere tool for manipulation.

Re: More than 350,000 Americans have signed a petition to withdraw their states from the U.S.
Residents of more than half of U.S. states, namely, 350,000 people declared their unwillingness to live in the country under the leadership of past winner in the presidential election of Barack Obama. They all signed the petition to withdraw their states from the U.S. on the official White House Web site.

Residents of 29 U.S. states, in particular, 350 thousand people signed a petition to secede from the United States in the region on the official White House Web site. Such a decision, U.S. residents took after Barack Obama's victory in the presidential elections of the past.

According to U.S. media reports, only the number of signatories per night increased from 100 to 350 thousand people, and the number of states, protesting against the "tyranny of the state," Obama - from 20 to 29. They are all you really need a peaceful secession from the United States and the opportunity to form their own government. Citizens referred to the Declaration of Independence, which states: "If any Form of Government becomes destructive, people have the right to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government."

Disapproval of the current president expressed not anonymous Internet users, but authorized U.S. citizens. In particular, the establishment of the Republic of Texas voted 56 people in the region, for the independence of Louisiana - 31000. Most petitions filed by residents of states that voted for Obama's opponent, Mitt Romney.

Last time from the U.S. states came out in 1860 and 1861, after President Abraham Lincoln was elected. Then the civil war began.
 Quoting: Gaver

I have kept saying that

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with those signing the petitions

In 40 years of watching elections, as a history major, I have *never* seen an election result in a flood of petition requests within days...

Not when Clinton was elected the 2nd time and many disagreed, not when Bush was elected the 2nd time and many disagreed..this is not a partisan thing, imho

it is a reflection of a deep division in the country, a sense that the government does not listen to them and worse...a belief that it useless trying to sent representatives or senators to represent them

Secession is divorce for nations, discussion of divorce is a measure of unreconcilable differences.

Let's see how this evolves in coming months. If it stops here, we're OK, if those numbers keep multiplying , worth keeping an eye on
 Quoting: IssueX

it also is in complete contrast to "election" results showing Obama getting 100% of the votes in many areas.

This is so mindnumbingly fucked up.

Deal with it, people. We are all Americans. I know I never talked secession crap when Bush "won" twice. He was the president, and so I prayed that he would succeed.

Re: More than 350,000 Americans have signed a petition to withdraw their states from the U.S.
350,000 is something around 1/10 of 1% of the population of the U.S.

In other words, who gives a shit? More people in America are wiping their asses each second. It's a number that means nothing.

And so . . . ?

Proves nothing.
