TARGET WORKERS PROTEST WORKING ON THANKSGIVING | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 3376005 United States 11/13/2012 12:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Black Friday does not need to start until 6AM the following morning. Most business are going to be open this year at Midnight. Still way too early. You can't even fully enjoy Thanksgiving day without an early dinner and a nap before a graveyard shift of work. These corporations need to lay the fuck off and wise up. They've undercut each others hours for so long that they've finally crept into Thanksgiving day itself. It's complete bullshit. |

I worked at K-Mart a long time ago and I had to work on Thanksgiving Day. I remember having to leave the table early so I could get to work. They wanted me to work on Christmas Day too! The store was not open on Cmas Day ROFL. What kind of loyalty do they think $5.50 per hour bought them? All this has happened before, and will happen again. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27573720 United States 11/13/2012 12:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | when i was a locksmith at a large hotel in NYC, i worked EVERY holiday for 2 years. when i drove night shift cabs in NYC, i worked EVERY holiday for 7 years. it's the name of the game in some businesses. that said, i honestly think all those retail workers are going to be staring at each other, and not really doing much else on thanksgiving night. instead of petitioning (which will do nothing), they should just stage a "refusenik" campaign. everybody just doesnt show for work that night. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27573720 I'd imagine that the majority of the hosp patients were happy that the nursing staff (and other hosp workers) showed up on the holidays! Many times I missed family gatherings to work weekends and holidays as well as evening and night shift. So what you're working on T-giving. Chances are you won't be busy anyway! Make yourself a coffe or soft drink and enjoy the evening. You'll be warm and have folks to talk to. Gas station workers don't get the holiday off. Nursing homes function 24/7. There's alot more to being thankful than a turkey dinner. My family celebrates true thankfulness daily. |

The employees should be fired if they dont want to work. And FUCK the Unions! I'm tired of waiting, somebody push the damn button already! Keep your 72 virgins, give me one old biker chick. |

I also have had to work on Thanksgiving and other Holidays and it wasn't even a retail store. I had a customer service job via computer/telephone. They were open every day..Except maybe CHristmas but I can't recall. I do know I worked Turkey Day at least 1/2 the day used the other 1/2 to spend with my kids and eat a dinner... It's a job. I never complained and you know it when you take the job usually. If you dont like it, make it a condition of your employment or something, or dont take the job. |

I honestly dont consider Turkey day to be a religious day..but either way they can rejoice with their friends and family any day of the yr...and be Damn Thankful they even have a job, there are plenty of folks who would be glad to take theirs if they dont want it.. A lot of business cannot simply shut down when ever they want even on holidays. Sure hope the Nurses/Drs/ Surgeons etc dont go on strike. |

What do you do together Thanksgiving night? Wait, don't answer that! I never forgive and I never forget I am a licensed firearm holder. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1447583 United States 11/13/2012 02:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Businesses will do whatever is profitable. If people are really concerned about businesses making their employees work on holidays, maybe consumers shouldn't shop on holidays, then the stores would have no incentive to open on holidays. I hear no outrage over the policemen, firemen, soldiers and doctors who never get a holiday off. |
Generation Doom User ID: 20816248 United States 11/13/2012 02:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Essential personnel like Police, Security, Fire, and EMS always have to work Thanksgiving/Christmas so I say suck it up and learn to deal with it like the rest of us. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1270016 United States 11/13/2012 02:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i worked at retail before and my ex still does. employees still need to come in during Thanksgiving to stock the shelves for the black friday and get it back to normal store mode right after. i remember he went to thanksgiving dinner but had to be at work by 10pm and worked a 12hr shift. other stores have to come in to have that store meeting to delegate what needs to be done, give out the numbers needed to hit their sales goal and stuff. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 17522961 Canada 11/13/2012 02:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I worked retail for over 10 years and never gave up a shift. I do agree that is sucks our culture requires shopping more and more at the expense of something actually somewhat more useful (dinner with family in thanks). Not sure what the answer is, I suppose all the people who signed the petition decided what the answer for them is. |
