That's one ominous name for a storm! The longest gamma ray burst ever recorded lasted for days instead of the usual hours, was headed straight for us, and came from the Constellation Draco!!

Meanwhile, another cross-country storm – Winter Storm Draco – was expected to bring heavy snow to the Northwest on Monday.

The higher elevations of the Cascades will see as much as 2 to 3 feet of snow above 7000 feet, Weather.com reported, with significant accumulations below 3000 feet.

In these higher elevations the snow could reach two or three feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS reported hurricane-force winds, as strong as 100 mph, in the mountains of the Northwest.

Along the coast, the winds are expected to reach 85 mph, fueling 30-foot waves. Most of the Oregon and Washington coasts have issued flood warnings in anticipation of tidal overflows and heavy rains in low-lying areas.

Later in the week the storm is expected to hit the Midwest.

From wikipedia. The stars contained in the draco constellation

The star Thuban (α Draconis) was the northern pole star arou|1988|p=237}} The Egyptian Pyramids were designed to have one side facing north, with an entrance passage designed so that Thuban would be visible at night. [2] Due to the effects of precession, it will once again be the pole star around the year 21000 AD. It is a blue-white giant star of magnitude 3.7, 309 light-years from Earth. The traditional name of Alpha Draconis, Thuban, means "head of the serpent". [1]

Draco in mythology.

Dragons in Greek mythology that may have inspired the constellation's name include Ladon, the dragon who guarded the golden apples of the Hesperides. [6] Hercules killed Ladon during his 12 labors; he was ta. sked with stealing the golden apples. the. constellation of Hercules is depicted near Draco. [1]

In Greco- Roman legend, Draco was a dragon killed by the goddess Minerva and tossed into the sky upon his defeat. The dragon was one of the Giant Titans, who battled the Olympic gods for ten years. As Minerva threw the dragon, it became twisted on itself and froze at the cold North Celestial Pole before it could right itself. [6]

Sometimes, Draco is represented as the demon son of Gaia, Typhon. [6]

I was just watching weather channel and they put up the list of names they will be using to name storms and D is for DRACO....who thought that up and I bet ya that storm is going to be a doozy.

wtf
 Quoting: JD11B

Draco, seriously? Are we up to "D" now?

Have we already done Azmodeus? Beelzebub and Cthulu?

What next, Vlad the Impaler

Gotta say that is fucked up, OP

We used to name hurricanes after the girl next door: Agnes, Betsy, Wilma and Camille

now we're naming winter storms after pagan gods of the underworld?

creepy

Sierra mtns. projected to receive 5-6 feet of snow this weekend, while that is not unusual, there is another storm lining up for next week, and a third behind that. All will form into drastic winter storms for the rest of the country.

Could definetly see 8-10 feet in the next 2 weeks. Maybe 10 - 14 feet, depending on the path of the low pressures through the jet stream.
