Re: Klonopin for migraines?
I've got TMJ migraines from hell. Try prescription strength Aleve. It's called Naproxen. 500 mgs...no side effects. Works great. If they get too bad, I take 10 mg. oxycontin.

Tried the aleve, it didn't work. Naproxen (Anaprox) doesn;t work either...

Bummer. I guess I don't really get the klonopin thing. But none of us are neurologists. I'm not a big fan of opiates, but they do work. Wishing you well.

Thanks. I'm concerned about long term and even short term problems, addiction, etc. Basically at the end of the line here with regards to treatment. In fact one doc said it was a deviated septum (which she did have due to the bad accident years ago), performed the surgery and though it helped short term, the migraines have come back with a vengeance... not sure why. We have tried diets, recording what she eats, etc. No link that we, nor the docs can find. I wonder if it could be neurological problems manifesting as she gets older? ...

I'm prescribed both benzo's and pain killers. However, I make sure I maintain my sensitivity to them by not taking them on a regular basis. However, if the benefits are outweighed by the risks...it might be time to stand up for more powerful opiates. It's your patient right.

Does that sound right? I thought Klonopin was a powerful drug? Anyone take Klon for migraines? Results?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3558872

I would suggest not taking it or any other drugs in its class. I was put on it for restless legs and should you ever have to come off it, you are in for one hell of a withdrawal process. My restless legs were found to be due to magnesium deficiency, MOst are in fact, and so of course I wanted off of it. it took 6 months of hell.

and MOST MIGRAINE HEADACHES ARE FROM TOO MUCH INSULIN PRODUCTION FROM YOU ALL EATING TOO MUCH SUGAR. I KNOW THIS ONE TOO. MINE WENT AWAY WHEN I GOT CONTROL ON MY INSULIN PRODUCTION WHICH I DID BY GOING ON A VERY RESTRICTED ALMOST CARB FREE DIET FOR 4 MONTHS.

Thanks. How would you know about the insulin levels? Would a insulin meter tell you during the migraine? If so, what is normal, and what would be an abnormal insuling level? Thanks.

Re: Klonopin for migraines?
Doesn't sound right to me but I'm not a doctor.

I've taken it for anxiety.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die.

Re: Klonopin for migraines?
Six months ago, my doctor put me on .5 mgs twice a day. 4 weeks ago, my insurance decided to stop paying for my meds. After a string of unfortunate events, I found myself no longer able to afford the medicine. So now, here I am into week 4 without the kolonopins. If I move my head or eyes, everything starts spinning. My head has had the worst pain I've felt (besides my gout) for 2 weeks now. Not to mention the constant feeling that someone is jabbing a pencil into my ear (a known side-effect). I wish I had never started taking this medicine.

I have had migraines before, but this feeling of pain in my head from the withdrawal is far worse than any migraine I've ever felt.

IT WAS My getting a meter that fully proved the insulin problem. My sugar would skyrocket to 300+ and crash in 20 minutes producing a god awful headache. Fully fitting the descriptions of migraines for which I had used all sorts of pain meds over time.

You have too much insulin if your sugar goes down too fast. Every time I went into doctors to have a 5 hr PP test done, where they feed you glucose drink, I thought I was going to DIE it was so bad. My one doctor finally concluded because my sugar rose so very high after drinking the stuff that I had a weird type of "chemical diabetes."

I have had ONE "migraine" since those days, after I took too much insulin because now I am diabetic and being diabetic is far superior to having hyperinsulinism.

Ooops, the script is for .5mg not 5mg, not sure if that makes a difference...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3558872

Makes a huge difference. .5 is a common starting dosage. They do sometimes prescribe it for migraines, when all other meds have not worked. It's an anti-anxiety med aka benzodiazepine. Thing with this drug is that it is a dependent med, and has a longer 1/2 life than most benzos. Do research & way the risks. Benzos are HPA suppressers (adrenal) drs won't tell you that. Again, if someone's suffering, the goal is to lesson the suffering...but, benzos are not always the answer. Just keep researching on every option & natural remedies. Migraines are awful :(

Re: Klonopin for migraines?
They are in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Some sister drugs called "xanax" and "valium" are other drugs in this same family with a MUCH shorter half-life.

Suffice it to say, that this drug is VERY effective at masking whatever the problem is. Having said that, it is an incredibly addictive drug. Not in the sense that you "jones", but in the sense that if you don't take it, you could actually end up having a seizure.

I've gotten off this stuff (yes, I had a prescription), both times by weening myself off of it for a period of 6 weeks. It was absolute pure hell.

Makes quitting smoking seem like a fun trip. Seriously. If you "need" it, then you need it. If you don't (and I was misdiagnosed), don't even go there. You've probably got about 1 week of using it regularly before dependence settles in (YMMV).

Peace and love.

tl;dr

It's evil stuff... stay away if you can.

I have read through this thread and no has mentioned psychedelic mushrooms. I remember watching 20/20 or one of those shows and it was about shrooms and how they helped migraine suffers. They had someone who suffered from cluster headaches and he swore by the treatment. Something to do with the psilocybin in the mushrooms. Just thought this might be an option some might want to look into. Especially those that nothing has worked for.

Glad to see you corrected yourself, OP.

Klonopin doesn't come in a 5mg pill, 2mg max.

Half mg is a relatively week dose.

But it is a benzo, and is addictive, and tolerance grows over time.

It is not a long term solution, it's a long term addiction you're looking at.

Re: Klonopin for migraines?
I'm prescribed clonzepam. (generic name for it)

1.5 mg and quite frankly, after 3 years of bouncing around between xanax & XR xanax, I have decided it was the best for me and my ocd.

Truthfully, I am not 100% comfortable taking it, but for me it is a quality of life issue. Right now, taking it, things are better.

The comment about the tics are true. You won't for sure, but it can happen. I will look at my wrist as if I'm wearing a wrist watch out of context. Like giving a distance, I pause, look at my invisible wrist watch and give the distance. I have a friend who takes about 4mg of xanax a day and has done for so years and he has the actually twitch of the neck. I've seen it get worse over the years.

It seems like it isn't uncommon as a prescription for migranes.

[link to www.drugs.com]

the last comment makes sense to me. perhaps there is something about clonazepam that will prevent a trigger of the migranes.

.5mg is about the lowest does you can get. It may make you drowsy, so don't hesitate to split them and take it twice a day. Yes, they are addicting, so with any drug, take as prescribed.

I hope your psychiatrist is reputable and ethical. This may help for your migranes. You can always throw them out.

Klonopin is an anti-seizure drug...and a controlled substance. It can and is used for other things, though...like panic attacks and/or anxiety disorder. I haven't heard it being used for migraines, but could be. It has the potential (not that it will, but just the potential) to be addictive. But in practice, it rarely is.

did you ever check yourself for the blood sugar anomaly called Hyperinsulinism? It is the cause of at least 90 to 90% of migraines and the good news, is that NO DRUGS ARE NEEDED. Getting your insulin DOWN IS. I suffered terribly until I was guided by my spirit guide to purchase a book in the health section of the book store written by a doctor who discovered certain people had the same issues as ones who took insulin did.

Get a METER and check your sugars after you eat within 1 hour or less and then an hour or so later. You will find a pattern. Working too heavy coupled with sugar use really mucks one up. and resultant high insulins are the cause again, of most migraines. nearly all of them. I had the full thing, auras, nausea intense headache, all of that. It was 100% a blood sugar issue. Read my other posts above.

op please be careful

i have been to drug rehab twice because of benzodiazapines. i've had a bad addiction history and benzos have been twice as addictive as narcotics for me and many others.

also, klonopin for migraines is a batshit insane and irresponsible decision by any doctor to make. if you have frequent severe migraines, as i do, the only abortive medicine that will be effective is a triptan such as imitrex or relpax. they are not preventatives, but they will help the pain.

I took it for about 3 months about 10 years ago to help me sleep. It was horrible. I will never ever take it again in my life. I slept great, but I was half comatose or something. I couldn't even walk 15-20 mins after taking it. Then when I stopped taking it, it made me feel like I wanted to throw myself into the damn wall. It was ridiculous.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.

Re: Klonopin for migraines?
Does that sound right? I thought Klonopin was a powerful drug? Anyone take Klon for migraines? Results?

No way in hell I'd take Klonopin for Migraines much less anything else! Get yourself on a good fish oil high in dha and Epa. Take 3-4 grams a day . With this regimen I have not had a migraine in 9 months. I was taking the fish oil for other reasons and noticed I had zero migraines since. I truly believe that Omega 3 deficiency plays a hand in Migraines. Good luck and steer clear of Klonopin. The side effects can be devastating!
