For more than a decade, Scott Routley has been living in a vegetative state.

He can’t talk. He can’t move. And although his eyes are open, no one is sure whether he can see.

But now, for the first time, doctors caring for the 39-year-old London, Ont., man say they know he’s not in pain.

And they learned it from Routley himself, by analyzing his brain waves when they asked him.

“This was a landmark moment for us because for the first time, a patient can actually tell us information, important information about how they’re feeling and their current situation,” said lead researcher Dr. Adrian Owen on Tuesday.

I would feel like crap if I pulled...

ex. let's say my mothers plug... years ago because she was in a vegetative state.

I would hold on. That's the loving thing to do.

Never give up on people.

Just because she may have "said" she was not in pain doesn't rule out the idea that they internally came to grips with their horrible existence, if you can even call it that, and wanted to die peacefully already. Tough choice for any family member to make, but if that we're to happen to me I would wanna be unplugged

I have a directive, that my attorney is holding, that I am not to be kept in a vegetative state under any circumstances. I have personally asked, several in my family, to please be the one to place a pillow over my face and press down...

But I am happy that they are working with people trapped in this kind of hell. I pray for them now, they have my deepest empathy. It is a deep fear, and I hope I die a horrible, painful death before I would ever have to endure anything like that--living for years in limbo.

Fair enough.

Maybe the mother would like too see her kids grow up even if shes confined to a bed in a vegetable state.

it will be useless if there is no medical coverage from medicare or insurance benefits... because doctor or nurse will not be spending their time on a patient for free.

Vegetable state dose not always mean you have to be hooked up to a machine 24/7, let alone be confined within a hospital.

Hospitals aren't magical places that as soon as you leave hospital grounds you die.

Some could easily be moved onto a bed, maybe a nice cabin in the country side or in a wheel chair. You could care for them yourself, or with the help of family.

At this rate who knows, maybe we can go a step further can wake people from this comatose state and gain some functionality someday.

This is actually pretty damn amazing. Think about it.

From a series of control questions one should be able to determine a Yes or No brain wave pattern.

The patient has a known and deep seeded fear of spiders for example: You could ask, "Do you like spiders" - that should be a No; or you could ask, "Are you afraid of spiders" - that should be a Yes.

There is only a subtle difference in the phrasing - so that would also speak towards any awareness

If you take that a step further.

You could write a code that translates the brain wave into actual language played back through a speaker.

I think this was on an episode of House.

Interesting book on this subject 'Johnny Got His Gun' -- written from the perspective of a guy who had both his arms and legs and face blown up in WWI.

It`s possible he has enduced other defences that humans have long forgot, maybe his brain accesed another dimencion to cope..

Who knows how it all works?,
