Anyone with a spare laptop?
O.K. my laptop is having major issues. No matter what I do it tends to overheat VERY FAST, and shut it'self off. I've tried everything from cooling pads and setting it up high for circulation, everything.

So, I'm sick with what's likely to be terminal. I'll know near the end of December. I'm ill enough where I can't work a normal job, and I get income by doing graphics online. I'm a photoshop guy. Well, my laptop wont let me keep photoshop open for more than two minutes now..

So, my humble plea of humility is that if anyone has a spare old laptop laying around that they don't use anymore, would be willing to donate it? I can pay if need be, this coming june, when my budget gets a little better.

I don't care what shape it's in, or anything, as long as it stays on, can run photoshop, and GLPVC. I'd be willing to do some free graphics in exchange.

PM me if you can help! Thank you!

There are free online programs that allow you to monitor the temp of the internal chips and adjust the cooling fans to maximise cooling. I'll try to get a link. It might work to fix your problem until you get more bucks.

I can't remember if this is the one I used but it helped my Dell 640 quite a bit.

Re: Anyone with a spare laptop?
There's a couple things you could try:

- there could be a buildup of dust and dirt inside the computer so open it up and blow it out with compressed air. You might be surprised how much junk builds up inside a laptop over time! You should be able to look up instructions for your model on how to open it up properly.

- if that doesn't fix it then you could try adding some thermal paste to the heatsinks (mine had a separate sink for the graphics card and the paste on it dried up and cracked and that was causing it to overheat). You can read more about it here

Rip that bitch apart, clean it, clean the dust from the heat-sink and fan, then re-apply thermal paste to the CPU and GPU chips, reinstall heat-sink, reassemble, done.

Of course its possible. Its not as easy as working on a desktop but that doesn't mean you can't open it up and fix it.

Maybe you could find a local Mom & Pop computer store and tell them your story. Go in and talk to the owner and offer to barter graphics work, or a trade in your old notebook hardware for something used that runs, and you'll make your next purchase there in return.

Never know until you ask. Some folks like to barter.

It's not as hard as it sounds. I use a little tackle box to keep track of the screws when I take laptops apart.

Take the battery out, take out the screws under where the battery was.

Remove all of the bottom screws. Use a paper clip to open the cd/dvd tray and just pull it out. You might have to give it a tug.

Remove the top bezel and the keyboard screws should be there, or there will be clips holding the keyboard in place.

Take all of the screws out that were under the keyboard.

Take a guitar pick and run it along the edges, undoing the plastic clips that hold it in place.

Then remove the motherboard screws, flip it right side up and you should have access to the heat sink to apply new thermal paste. Use rubbing alcohol to clean the CPU and heatsink very thoroughly.

Only put a small bb sized dot of new thermal paste on the center of the CPU, so when you put the heat sink back on it will spread out from the center. Otherwise, too much will act as an insulator. Remember: The metal is the conductor, the paste only fills the air gaps.

Be careful with it. Take it slow. Go on youtube they might have disassembly instructions.

I can usually do this in about 20 mins or so for 99% of the laptops I come across.

I've popped open dozens of laptops with no problems. It's all about putting humpty back together again. So many screws.

This. My brother's computer was doing the same thing. He shipped it to my husband and this is what was done to it. BUT.. have a container with lots of compartments to store screws in so they don't get lost and be able to take step by step pictures.

Also, give [link to www.tim.id.au] a try. You might find your laptop's service manual there, which will help A LOT if you've never taken a laptop apart.

Re: Anyone with a spare laptop?
Get a piece of card board and draw the shape of your laptop after you take off the keyboard. Stick the screws into the card board as to where they were in the laptop. This makes reassembly much easier.

You can also get older laptops from ebay very cheap. I got a gateway solo 6550 for forty bucks.

Thank you for this, I've been contemplating a laptop lately, have never had one, didn't know where to start for what to look for.

Looks like Amazon has some good deals on refurbished models of this Thinkpad you mentioned, was just reading reviews and people seem to think highly of this model.

OP I hope someone can help you out with a spare laptop! All my computers I've ever had were castoffs from people who upgraded and gave me their old ones, I've never bought one.
