Night rainbow

Are you in a northern state? Could it be an aurora?

Is it raining at all?

South of Raleigh, NC.
There are clouds, but the northern sky looks like sunset with a faint rainbow coming up from the bright sunset looking part. trying to get a pic of it.

From our position, it was a bit to the west. Did it have a dark cloud underneath as well? Seemed to get brighter for a bit too. Wasn't aurora borealis or the moon but was something we have never seen before.

That's def. the aurora. How can you see it all the way down in NC when I can't see it here in NJ??

Heh ok so it is the aurora. Just didn't look like it to me at first....

I don't know. Just know I went out side right around 10 pm and was like cool sunset. then I said wait it's 10 pm. Then I was like it's in the N-NW sky. Plus it's cloudy.

Still out there even brighter now. very cool.

But how am I seeing this in NC? I am too far south am I not?

I would think so, but that pic. says otherwise... I'm well north of you here in NJ but I can't see the horizon due to trees/bldgs, so maybe that's why i can't see it? It is cloudy here too, and tons of light pollution by my house. But IDK?

Hey OP just a quick thought, is there any way there could be multiple transformers blowing near you? If the colors are intermittent it would remind me of what the sky looked like here when Sandy hit, transformers blowing left and right, blue-green and red. But if it's constant, then I can't imagine what else it could be aside from the aurora, and there is a geomagnetic storm going on right now.

Could it be bouncing off the clouds like CB radio skip?

I know there is a geomagnetic storm going on. I am just curious How I see it in NC. Anyone else in NC or close by see it.

You may of been brushed by the Aurora. Your picture looks pretty close to what an Aurora looks like. If it was I say congrats!!!
