Night rainbow
Weird.
I just saw a thread on here about a rainbow in the night sky.
I went out just a few minutes ago to let my dog do his business. I looked in the northern sky and there is a rainbow and it is dark also looks like a sunset but in the north. It is 10 till 10 here. Looks very strange and I can not find the other post I saw.

Are you in a northern state? Could it be an aurora?

Is it raining at all?

South of Raleigh, NC.
There are clouds, but the northern sky looks like sunset with a faint rainbow coming up from the bright sunset looking part. trying to get a pic of it.

Here's the thread I started earlier,

Thread: Nighttime Rainbow to the Northwest

From our position, it was a bit to the west. Did it have a dark cloud underneath as well? Seemed to get brighter for a bit too. Wasn't aurora borealis or the moon but was something we have never seen before.

From SolarHam.com:

Just a quick update. Bright green aurora is now visible to the north here in Eastern Ontario, Canada. If you are located in the northern tier of the USA, Canada and Europe, you should be now looking to the north.

I would think so, but that pic. says otherwise... I'm well north of you here in NJ but I can't see the horizon due to trees/bldgs, so maybe that's why i can't see it? It is cloudy here too, and tons of light pollution by my house. But IDK?

Hey OP just a quick thought, is there any way there could be multiple transformers blowing near you? If the colors are intermittent it would remind me of what the sky looked like here when Sandy hit, transformers blowing left and right, blue-green and red. But if it's constant, then I can't imagine what else it could be aside from the aurora, and there is a geomagnetic storm going on right now.

Precursors to the December 1811 New Madrid Earthquake...

Earthquakes

Ashville, N.C., December 19 [1811]

To the Editors of the Raleigh Star.

Gentlemen, - I take the liberty to transmit the following account of an earthquake, which happened on the night between the 15th and 16th instant. For several nights previous, the [1]Aurora Borealis brilliantly illuminated the the sky with its trembling coruscations; [2] the late appearance of a splendid comet, and the [3]blondlike colour of the sun for several days, had alarmed a great many superstitious people. They taled of war, and when the news of governor Harrison’s dear bought victory arrived, it brought to their recollection all those appearances, which are still believed (as these are now) to have been the awful precuriers of that bloody war, by which we gained our independence.

[4] On September 17, 1811 there was another solar eclipse—which, again, was predicted by The Prophet ["Tecumseh was a Shawnee Indian leader whose name meant “Shooting Star” or “He who walks across the sky.”].

Geomagnetic Storm. Its an Aurora Borelis. Go to Spaceweather.com and add it too your favorites and check it everyday like you would the weather report.

A M class solar flare has caused a Geo Effective storm. Your seeing the effects as an Aurora. Enjoy it. They come in all the colors of the Rainbow.
