We've been living in rural areas for the past 20 years where the nearest Walmart was over 80 miles away. Recently we've been investing in those motion sensor lights for the stairways inside and out. I've sick and tired of tripping over the dog letting her out at night - let alone stepping on chicken poop outside the front door. More motion sensor flood lights are being purchased for in the kitchen - again for that late night trip or in case the power goes out so we can at least use the propane camp stove to heat up water for tea or coffee.

The last trip to Walmart was to stock up on batteries.

As for inside - talk radio or youtube recordings is comforting to have on in the background. Skype is handy for calling friends. And www.hulu.com is a real treasure trove for entertainment and their is music (youtube) as well. When I'm having trouble sleeping putting on one of the talk radio shows off of youtube works great.

Good luck. It takes a bit of time to adjust and get comfortable with oneself.

If the internet goes down - it's literally back to the drawing board and catching up on the Fox Fire books.
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

I remember the first night the girls and I spent alone here on our small farm ! We heard the screams of the bobcats and the coyotes and it was so dark !we huddled together on my bed and did not sleep very much. What a hoot in the years to come we have been very comfortable. We moved from a subdivision because a sex predator moved in next door. Let me tell you I am more fearful of two legged animals than four legged.

Do UHF transceivers also transmit digital data between stations?

I live on 500 acres, if there is a noise it would have to be man made before we did anything about it.
It can be very noisy...cows, horses, wild boar, birds , dingos etc...but if a car goes up the road...then its all soldiers to their posts...well the dogs anyway

You have GLP, stay up all night and all day if you are afraid OP and read/learn online.

Not going to lecture you, you are there for some reason obviously-marriage/children/family/finances whatever!!

Learn a couple hobbys that "you" like. You do not need a dog; go online and find cams and motion detectors that make noises if something moves outside or inside of your home.

Eat well as most country people do and do as you want. Get a nightcam and video the sky for all of us while you are there.

True. I read that spiders had white eyeshine at night...sure enough they do! I was curious about my dogs eyeshine- red which i found to be unusual. Who knew different critters could have different eyeshine.

Don't be scared, OP. You are safer in the middle of nowhere than in a city.

Once you get used to it you will never go back. Don't think I could ever live in a big city.

If you are alone I'd suggest a big dog not only to make you feel more secure but mainly for companionship.

Good luck & enjoy!

Re: I just moved to my new house in the middle of nowhere and it's quiet, too quiet
It's in a rural area where there's no streetlights so it's dark as fuck.

And it's really quiet.

I'm not used to this at all, I used to live in the city with lots of noise and lights 24/7...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1440618

Living in the country is good... you'll soon learn what to notice in the night and what not to notice. For example -- listen for tree frogs and crickets... owls, bats, coyotes... distant traffic or railroads. Notice the colors of the night: the sky is actually bright with stars, the moon, the Milky Way galaxy, satellites, and other things; even the sky itself has a glow of the Aurora Borealis. The time will come when you can determine the changes in the night sounds and use the ambient light of the night to see into the dark...

Sudden silence is danger in nature.

Subtle movement in nature signifies danger.

Get some food, get a weapon -- preferably a 30-30 or 30-06 rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun and lots of ammo. If you can afford it, get an AK-47 or AR-15 too just for shits and giggles. Make sure you have a well that has lots of water. Get a lot of firewood stored up and have a wood-burning stove. Grow a garden; have chickens; get a few goats. If you have a farm pond, make sure it is well-stocked with fish. Have a 100-gallon gas tank out away from the house near the barn... lock it up but have it.

Take a pie to the neighbors and introduce yourself...

The world doesn't get much better than the above...
