Witness: Syrian jet strikes rebel-held border town

A Syrian warplane bombed the rebel-held town of Ras al-Ain near the Turkish border for a third day on Wednesday, a Reuters witness said, rocking buildings on the frontier and sending up huge plumes of smoke.

Rebels overran Ras al-Ain last week during an advance into Syria's mixed Arab and Kurdish northeast that has sent thousands of refugees fleeing for safety in Turkey. Syrian jets have been bombing the town since Monday.

Syria bombards rebel area near Turkish border

A Syrian warplane bombed the town of Ras al-Ain near the Turkish border for a third day today as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad pressed an air assault to dislodge rebels.

The jet struck twice before circling and bombing again, rocking buildings on the Turkish side of the frontier and sending up huge plumes of smoke, a Reuters reporter in the Turkish border town of Ceylanpinar said.

It marked the third day of a jet bombardment that has brought Syria's civil war back perilously close to Turkish soil, testing a promise by Ankara to defend itself against any spillover of violence from its neighbour.

Rebels overran Ras al-Ain last week during an advance into Syria's mixed Arab and Kurdish northeast that has triggered some of the biggest refugee movements of the conflict.

Some 140 km to the west, three Turkish border villages were evacuated on Tuesday, a security official told Reuters, citing "security reasons".

Turkish media reports said the villages, located in the Suruc district of Sanliurfa province, had a combined population of around 1,000. The official declined to elaborate, but the move suggested the border clashes could be spreading.

Turkey warns Syria against violating its airspace

Istanbul (dpa) - Turkey on Wednesday warned Syria not to violate its airspace amid heavy fighting between government forces and rebels along the border.

"Military engagement rules established by the prime minister are still valid. Necessary response will be given to Syrian planes or helicopters which violate our airspace," Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz was quoted as saying by the Anadolu news agency.

The Free Syrian Army revealed it has held talks with officials from Britain and its allies, and is hopeful that a no-fly zone will be imposed on Syria’s border.

Fahad al-Masrai, spokesman for the FSA's joint command in Syria said: "There are meetings going on now between the military leaders of the Syrian revolution and Britain as well as US, France, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. For security reasons we can’t say where."

Couldn't they have been Syrian jets though? How many people could tell the difference between the jets from sound alone (Ok, I live near an airbase and can tell the difference between a Tornado and a Eurofighter, but still)?
