Sandy is expected to do serious damage to the area; especially in the areas where beach scraping didn't happen and breached jettys sit in need of repair. Sen. Because of the location of the project a number of reviews have been carried out and these have raised serious question marks about the suitability of the site. A report carried out by the National Research Council in 2010 determined that over the 50-year life of the new laboratory there was a 70% chance of the accidental release of a pathogen.

I took a bioweapons class a few months ago and my professor (who is a gov worker) had told us that parts of the lab have been slowly being moving to a location in the mid-west. This has been debated and fought over for a few years now, because it would be placing deadly viruses and bacteria closer to human and livestock population.

I would say this is the biggest doom of all for East Coast after storm , Government only knows what is in soil, water ect and I would bet they have know for many years or would not have been looking at relocating

Plum Island's freezers also contain samples of polio and diseases that can be transferred from animals to humans.[1] In 1991, the center's freezers were threatened following a power outage caused by a hurricane.[1]

Indeed, I heard the same thing, I think it was Texas or somewhere pretty central, but I think the plans were put on hold after security fears, but I could be wrong.

The replacement facility is the NBAF at Kansas State University. Sadly this is NOT the case. I read in the Topeka Capital Journal yesterday (physical since I was at work at the time), that it's future is at the mercy of the budget talks. The federal government is wanting the state to give more funding as well, but we are barely holding onto a balanced budget as it is so that won't happen.

Ideally the facility just east of the Bill Snyder Football Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas (you can see it sometimes in the background on televised games from there) would have opened in 2018, but that now has a question mark by it. Supposedly they have completed or nearly completed the central utilities building but that's it. Some ground work being done but little actual facility work until the money starts flowing again.

Anything that has been moved to K-State would be in the regular research facilities with next to zero security. Most of the buildings are unlocked 24/7 for student access, and the one area I remember ever seeing with a sort of checkpoint was to go into the research nuclear reactor. So I definitely pray that they have not moved anything there.

Those places disappoint me. I mean we never see mutant killer shrews or any cool animals coming from them and making their way to a large city and eating people like in the movies. I want mutant animal fang on flesh action!

Evidently I was mistaken and it was the Manhattan Mercury that I saw the article in. Sadly we didnt keep the paper and the online version requires subscription to view it. I will see if the local library has it and see if I cannot transcribe it.

No problem nor thanks needed. Since I live in the area I feel it my duty to keep an eye on it and report in when I see threads pop up about it or Plum Island. Things had been quiet of late until I saw that article. Lots of work going on at the nearby stadium, so I sometimes get conflicting reports from people I kniw that work in the area.

If there is work going on there, it is off the books and not part of the public plans.

I could not remember where he had stated when I wrote the post, but I was thinking Kansas, only did not want to say that in case I was wrong. He had said something about getting funding to build a whole new facility, but when people found out, they threw a fit (as I would). All is would take is one small mishap and the entire country could be infected with something potentially dangerous. I know he was completely against moving the facility. He said as of today (well, a few months ago in class) the federal gov wanted to relocate the facility because it needs major upgrades and it's costing a fortune to secure because of its location. Apparently, it would be cheaper to build and secure a new campus.

They also have a wide variety of variolla strains.

Read Lab 257 and Nelson DeMille's Plum Island. This place should of been shut down years ago. Lyme's disease was released from here by accident years ago. That's why it started around the island and slowly spread out. Some other little nasties were released as well but I'll leave that up to you to research.

Oh yes, I remember the fuss it caused. In the end the jobs creation argument trumped other things, and reluctant support was given to K-State to go forward. There was a huge fight between Kansas And Texas over it as they were the finalists, so it is understandable why someone would think it is placed in Texas and I still have people ask me if it is there. I think that fight settled due to the presence of Ft. Riley just down the road if anything happened.

There are still a good number of people that would not cry one bit if it got defunded.

It is in an area north of the main campus so it does have that, but the area is well traveled as a popular walking trail loops around the site and you can easily just walk onto neighboring pastures. Security will always be an issue since they are planning on allowing upper level undergrads work in the "safer" labs if I remember right.

On July 12, 2008, a creature dubbed the Montauk Monster washed ashore at Ditch Plains Beach near the business district of Montauk, New York. The creature, a quadruped of indeterminate size, was dead when discovered, and was assumed by some to have come from Plum Island due to the currents and proximity to the mainland. Palaeozoologist Darren Naish studied the photograph and concluded from visible dentition and the front paws that the creature may have been a raccoon.[18] This was also the opinion of Larry Penny, the East Hampton Natural Resources Director,[19] though others claim that this is unlikely and interpret the fleshless part of the upper jaw, visible in the photo, as a beak, implying that the creature was a kind of hybrid monster.
