Israel's prime minister says the army is prepared for a "significant widening" of its operation in the Gaza Strip, now in a second day of intense air raids and naval attacks on militant targets, as southern Israel was pounded with rocket fire from Gaza.

Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters on Thursday that Israel has "made it clear" it won't tolerate continued rocket fire on its civilians.

"In the past 24 hours, Israel has made it clear that it will not tolerate rocket and missile attacks on its civilians. I hope that Hamas and the other terror organizations in Gaza got the message," Netanyahu said. "If not, Israel is prepared take whatever action is necessary to defend our people."

Warfare 101:

Phase 1: Take out enemy comms and infrastructure.. Do not allow them to move or communicate.. Nor tend their wounded (psychological warfare).. Take out power supply and ability to operate (water, power roads et al)

Phase two: Air superiority.. Take the high ground and dominate the area.

Phase 3: Deploy ground troops to take and hold ground to tighten the noose.

Phase 4: Close in with and destroy the enemy.

Phase 5: The reorg

Phase 6: Withdraw or use ground troops to moniter, dominate the area with standing patrols and use them to route out any more resitence.
