Growing up in Afghanistan we had to leave because my little brother was murdered, and my older brother had his hands cut off. People were trying to force them to convert to Islam. It's not the only reason obviously, but usually they are trying to drown out the voices in their heads. In Islam they believe there are good and evil spirits, called the Jinn. Because of the nature of Islam, their spirits are open to all sorts of influences and many spirits inhabit in Muslims, and whisper a lot of things into their ears. This is being completely honest, some Muslims literally do have "supernatural powers." Some can see into other rooms, some can tell what you are thinking, they do this through the "Jinn" which give them power. Jinn's are basically demons though
