The decision about the expansion of the IDF operation in Gaza to a possible ground offensive will be made within a day or two, Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday.

The minister further added, "A decision will be made in a day or two. There is a clear plan for a ground deployment as well as a partial entrance alternative. Another alternative is full deployment and an exit at a later stage. It is also possible we'll go in and stay there.

Tarf - where are you seeing this? Last count I saw were that only 16K of the 75K drafted had actually been called up. If that number is now up to 60K, well that would sure signal an escalation (ie ground invasion) is in the works

Egypt's efforts to negotiate a truce between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza are ongoing and a deal to stop the fighting could be close, the Egyptian prime minister said on Monday.

"Negotiations are going on as we speak and I hope we will reach something soon that will stop this violence and counter violence," Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said in an interview in Cairo for the Reuters Middle East Investment Summit.

"I think we are close, but the nature of this kind of negotiation, (means) it is very difficult to predict," he said.
