Egypt confiscates warheads smuggled from Libya

CAIRO (AP) - Egyptian authorities confiscated trucks carrying explosive warheads and a variety of small-arms ammunition smuggled from Libya, security officials said Wednesday.

A flood of weapons from its western neighbor has added to Egypt's security concerns as police have yet to fully return to their duties since last year's uprising. Smuggled weapons often fall into the hands of Islamist militants in the Sinai Peninsula, or pass via underground tunnels to the Gaza Strip, the site of fierce fighting over the past week between Hamas militants and Israeli forces.

The Egyptian officials said authorities seized the pick-up trucks, carrying 108 warheads for Soviet-designed Grad rockets, near Marsa Matrouh, 270 miles (430 kilometers) northwest of Cairo on the Mediterranean coast. Suspected smugglers had fled the scene.

Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) -- While Israel’s battle with Hamas in Gaza is showcasing its ability to defend itself and punish attackers, it also is delivering a warning to Iran, the Islamist group’s key supporter and a nation Israel regards as it existential enemy.

Hamas, considered a terrorist group by the U.S., Israel and the European Union, is funded and armed largely by Iran, which Israeli leaders say would threaten their nation’s survival if it obtained nuclear weapons.

Israeli President Shimon Peres yesterday charged that Iran is encouraging Hamas to attack Israel. “They are trying again to encourage the Hamas to continue the shooting, the bombing; they are trying to send them arms,” Peres told CNN. “They are out of their mind.”

"U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday there were 'many details to work out' before a cease-fire could be reached to end the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. 'I am particularly concerned about the spiral of violence at the time of intense efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel,' Ban said. 'We all know there are many details to work out. But while that happens civilians continue to die.' "
