It's a fragile ceasefire, with the inevitable risk of turning to custard due to entrenched motives and violent mechanisms of Hamas and their backers. Israel seems to be positioning itself for the full backing of the international community for an invasion, if the ceasefire fails. US Secretary of State Clinton warned Israel not to do anything before the UN vote of palestinian non-member statehood - giving the impression that Israel will first have to act alone, and washing their hands of implication if they do. But something more subtle, by appearing to favour the Palestinian situation - the US may also maintain access to their military bases within nearby Arab nations (which they will need after it turns to custard). |
